In high school, the teachers tell you to do your homework and study for tests. They're always saying that they're preparing you for college. Then finals come around, and you get stressed out. You haven't studied all year, you've gotten lucky on all the tests, and you slid through the last three years. You open your book for the first time, go over the vocab words and call that studying. Then you get to college. You hope that it's as easy as high school was, but it isn't. When you come to college, you learn how different it is from high school.
When you come to college, you have to study. I know the teachers told you that you would have to study in high school, but you probably didn't. Well, in college, you really do need to. If you don't study, you probably won't pass the class. College is a lot harder than high school. If college was easy, everyone would come. As you enter college, there are a few things that you need to remember.
1. You have to go to class.
While those 8 a.m. classes aren't fun, you still have to go. If you don't show up to class, you will miss a lot of information. The professors aren't going to cancel class because you don't show up, and some professors won't tell you what you missed. If you have a valid excuse, they are more likely to forgive you, but if you were just sleeping, you're toast. Wake up, go to class and pass!
2. The work is hard.
College is not easy. You have a lot more information that you have to remember, and it is way more complicated than high school algebra or history. While high school teachers would be upset if you didn't read the assignment, most of them would just go over it in class. In college, however, when they tell you to do something, you have to do it. During the next class, they will more than likely move onto something else.
3. You have to do your homework.
If you don't do your assignments, you won't pass the class. Yes, you will have a lot of homework, but you have to do it. Even if there's a new Ashton Kutcher movie out, the homework is more important. If you want to pass your classes and graduate college, you have to do your homework. You can't avoid it or wait until the last minute like you did in high school.
Even though college is difficult, it is worth it. You go to school for a few years, and then your job opportunities are limitless. You can be a doctor, a teacher or a vet. If you go to college, do your work and pass your classes, you can be whatever you want to be. You will probably have more than a few all-nighters, but they will pay off. You can get your work done, and you can pass. Then, a few years later, you will be the student walking across stage, accepting your degree. You can do it—just don't give up.
