Many people in the Scranton area will tell you that our little city is awful. However, I do not think it is all that bad. In fact, there are a lot of awesome things about Scranton. Here are the top 10 things about the city of Scranton.

10. The Everhart Museum

It is certainly not the best museum in the world. That being said, the Everhart offers unique exhibits on art and natural history. They also feature exhibits that tour the county, so it is a unique experience every time you visit.

9. "The Office"

"The Office" was set in Scranton. The show really made the city well-known around the country. Even though the city in the show was often times far from what it really is, it was still nice to be a well-known city.

8. Celebrations

To quote "The Office," "There ain’t no party like a Scranton party, cause a Scranton party don’t stop.” This is completely true. From the Italian festival to Parade Day, the city of Scranton knows how to have an awesome celebration.

7. The city council meetings

Did anyone else watch these on TV? I will admit, the chance at fifteen minutes of fame did bring out Scranton’s worst and weirdest. However, these were so entertaining. They were televised to show people what was going on, but people watched because they were so funny and strange.

6. Montage Mountain

For those who enjoy skiing, Montage Mountain has some awesome slopes. Anyone who goes skiing should definitely check it out. Skiing not your thing? Is it too hot outside to ski? Don’t worry, they also have a water park!

5. Toyota Pavilion

Since the pavilion is on Montage Mountain, I considered putting them together. However, I feel that this deserves its own spot. What is better than an outdoor concert arena that features some of the biggest names in music every summer? Every summer, the mountain is filled with people and music. The best part is that outdoor concerts just have a much better vibe to them.

4. Scranton Cultural Center

The cultural center hosts many different performances all year round. The highlight is its Broadway Theater League. Several national tours of Broadway musicals will make a stop in Scranton every year. Scranton was once one of the biggest places for theater (behind New York, of course) and the Cultural Center is a nice reminder of that time.

3. Steamtown

I am, of course, referring to the trains and not the mall. How many people can say that their little city has a national park? Steamtown is not just any national park. We have trains! You can even ride the trains, which is a lot cooler than your typical national park.

2. Minor League Baseball

Scranton has been the home to minor league baseball teams for many years. Even though it is not a major league game, the experience is still the same. You do not need to live in a big city to grow up going to the ballpark.

1. Food

From Coney Island Hot Dogs to Old Forge Pizza, the Scranton area has some of the best food, and you will not be able to convince a local otherwise!

Despite our city's lack of money and overabundance of potholes, Scranton is pretty cool. So don’t worry about the risk of a mine fire starting under your feet at any given moment. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy Scranton: The Electric City!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
