Top 10 Guilty Pleasure Movies

For anyone who knows me, it's obvious that movies are a huge part of my life. I can go on for hours and hours about movies or just the “have you seen this?” game. Although people love to say movies are unrealistic for the most part in their portrayals of various subjects or people, movies have taught me more than anything ever could, and without them I would be completely lost. Now just from those semi-cliché thoughts alone (although to me it’s not cliché if it’s true) this probably looks like it is going to be a “my top 10 movies that taught me so much” list. Not the case at all. In fact, I am going the complete opposite route here. We all have those movies that affect us in different ways, but part of the fun about movies is that you don’t have to have an extensive explanation on why you like them; sometimes you just do. I like to engage in in-depth and deep conversations as much as the next movie lover, but I have plenty of guilty pleasure films that are thought to not be necessarily “good” but hey, I like them, so that’s all that matters. So here are my top 10 movies that I list as my own guilty pleasures (because "Love Actually," "Little Manhattan"and "Bridesmaids"are not even guilty — they are just good).

1. "John Tucker Must Die"

I think almost every girl likes this movie, and it doesn’t surprise me. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s about the most popular jock in school, John Tucker, or so one of the girls lays out in the beginning of the film. But is it really about him? Not really. What is so fun about the film is how it really follows three girls who realize they are all dating the same guy. But instead of getting mad at each other for it (which they do for one scene, but moving on…) they decide to seek revenge on him using the new girl in school in the best ways possible. What can I say — it’s fun, entertaining and has some great moments.

2. "The Last Song"

Ah, Nicholas Sparks movies… really, not a fan for the most part. I really do like "The Notebook" and "A Walk to Remember" does get to me, but other than those the films have really dropped off the deep end. However, "The Last Song" has always been one of my go-to summer films. The location of the film is beautiful and the film explores so much more than just the love story on the surface. It is much more about family and forgiveness, just to name two themes. It’s a touching film and the scene of the two in the car singing “She Will Be Loved” can soften even the hardest of hearts.

3. "Don Jon"

Now, "Don Jon" did do pretty decent critically, but I list it as a guilty pleasure because nobody wants to come right out and say, “I like 'Don Jon,' ya know, that movie about a guy addicted to porn!” I mean, I’m not afraid to admit it and have told plenty of people I think it’s a great movie because when you really get down to it, it is. The reason why is because, sure, on the surface it’s about a guy who enjoys porn more than actual physical relationships, but the themes presented in the film go way beyond it. It’s able to display the unrealistic expectations both men and women have about relationships through the most opposite form of entertainment — porn and romance films. So yes, the porn movie has depth and Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a great job considering it was his directorial debut where he also wrote and acted in the film.

4. "Just Go With It"

I am so surprised not more people have seen this movie! Although I’m not the biggest fan of Adam Sandler films, this one I have always found hilarious. Adam plays a guy who wears a fake wedding ring to pick up women (weirdly enough, right?) and when he finally meets a girl he likes, she is turned off by his “cheating” antics. But to prove that he is actually getting divorced, he has Jennifer Aniston and her kids pose as his fake family and from there the movie is just great. I quote the film all the time and highly recommend it.

5. "The Interview"

I have seen this film way too many times. There is just something about Seth Rogen and James Franco together that makes this movie gold. From all the controversy about it, I’m sure everyone knows the premise of the film, but if you don’t then look it up because I was so surprised by this film. I didn’t think I was going to find it funny at all, but it has many scenes I absolutely loved. From the first scene with Eminem I was already on board. It may really surprise you, too!

6. "Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging"

If I had to pick one film that is my guiltiest guilty pleasure, it would 100 percent be this one. Just the title makes you say, “Huh?” I have no explanation for myself, honestly. This is just the most typical of teen films with pretty much every convention possible, aside from it being a British film. It goes back to Aaron Taylor Johnson’s younger days, and that’s also what makes it so watchable and funny to see. My sister and I have watched this too many times to count just out of sheer entertainment and look. I’m not proud of it, but I like it, so whatever.

7. "Paper Towns"

So far out of the two John Green films, this is the one almost nobody liked that much, or if they did they weren’t huge on it. However, this movie hit something inside of me and brought the nostalgia to a new level. I think it was really charming, relatable and just all-around amazing. Nat Wolff was fantastic and the chemistry he had with his other two friends in the movie was one of the best parts of the film. Contrary to popular opinion, I liked it a lot more than "The Fault in Our Stars" and am looking forward to seeing this movie again as soon as I can.

8. "American Pie"

All of the "American Pie" films are my guilty pleasures. I grew up with them. I can’t deny my 10-year-old self the amount of fun I had watching these when I wasn’t supposed to (so rebellious, I know). I remember my siblings and I thinking Steve Stifler was the funniest and feeling so embarrassed for Jason Biggs during almost every scene. Not to mention the soundtracks to these movies are amazing with Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Blink 182 and much more.

9. "White Chicks"

I think this is one of everyone’s guilty pleasures. "White Chicks" (as IMDb puts it) is about “two disgraced FBI agents who go way undercover in an effort to protect hotel heiresses the Wilson sisters from a kidnapping plot.” What is great is that they actual pose as the Wilson sisters, two white valley girls who are obviously completely different than themselves. It’s an all-around entertaining film and whenever it is on TV I always watch it.

10. "Bubble Boy"

So get this. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a boy who was born without an immune system, so he must live in a plastic bubble for his life. But when the girl of his dreams goes to Las Vegas to get married to another guy, he makes the journey in his bubble to stop the wedding. How great does that sound? Fantastic, I know. Joking aside, I love this movie because it knows how insane it is, doesn’t try to prove anything and just goes with the flow. It's a road trip comedy and whenever I need a little pick me up or just pure entertainment, I go to "Bubble Boy."

So there it is, my list of guilty pleasures, and I hope some of you can share in the guiltiness with me.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
