Ranking 10 Cultural Dishes You Never Knew You Needed

In this article, I will be talking about my top ten favorite foods. I know it may sound boring reading about food, but I wanted to share this because it'll give each reader a chance to try something new. Also, each of these foods will have something meaningful, for the reason I chose them.

10. Barbacoa

Is a type of meat that I really can't describe in detail, but I can only tell you that it's amazing. I remember that I would always eat this at a family reunion and seeing everyone's faces laughing and happy made me feel good on the inside. This food, besides being delicious has a special place in my heart.

9. Concha

Is a type of bread that every time I see it I have to have it. Concha is a sweet bread that goes great with anything and you can have it whenever you want. This bread means a lot to me because during the winters after eating a warm meal, I would have a piece of this bread with some milk and it would leave such a peace in my mind that I knew things somehow were going to be okay.

8. Enchiladas

It goes with the winter. Every time my mom would make me some enchiladas she would always make it with rice and potatoes. Usually she would make these during the hardcore winter, and that's when it gave me such a great sensation on the inside that I didn't really worry about the next day or the previous day. I guess somewhere deep inside, food brings out the kid in me.

7. Torta

Is something a bit simpler, but something that can never go out of style, and it's called a torta. A torta is a type of sandwich that can be made with anything. It'll normally be with ham, mayo, cheese, lettuce, etc. Every time my mom would make this for me, it was always for school and soon I learned to make it on my own. Even though it was just a sandwich when I would make it, it was better than my mom's and every time my dad would want one he'd always ask ME to make it. Maybe it was to make me feel good about myself or maybe because I actually did it better than my mom, I may never know.

6. Jumbo Jack

My mom never prepared it for me because she couldn't. This was a Jack In The Box, Jumbo Jack. When I was younger it was rare for me to go to Jack, but it was awesome because every time I did, it was with my family and we would always talk about life, even if I wouldn't understand it as a kid. It's something I can never forget.

5. Caldo de Verdura

Is something I don't ever enjoy, but it always gave me a sense of motivation. This food is Caldo de Verdura - I never liked this, but every time my parents would tell me to eat it, they gave me a sense of challenge that if I would eat this I can do anything that I set my mind to or I wasn't going to get any dessert.

4. Pechuga de Pollo

Is my next favorite thing. When my mom would make this kind of chicken, I just knew that my day was going to be great. Whenever I was in school this was all I could think of and every time my mom would prepare it, it was always sunny and nothing ever went wrong.

3. Cheesecake

Who doesn't love cheesecake? I remember the first time I tried it, was at my uncle's fancy work dinner. I was very picky when it came to food and on that night my parents told me to eat everything so I wouldn't make my uncle look bad. What ended up happening is that I ate almost the entire cake to the point that I threw up...oops.

2. Tamales

Is this a surprise? Well it shouldn't be, because my number two is tamales! It's the one food that no matter what, can always bring people together. I could never get to my mother's cooking level, but her making it always made people want more. I wouldn't brag about my mom's food if I didn't have anything to back it up, but let me tell you that her tamales are the best of the best!

1. Rice

For those who know me, should know my number one. My number one food is rice. You may think how is rice my number one, but honestly I can't even answer that question myself. Rice was the first meal my mom taught me how to make and it's something that I think I make good if not better than my mom's level. One thing about this dish is that it always brought my mom and I together and that's something that could never be taken away from me.

Tell me what are your top favorite foods and why!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
