“What do you want to do with your life,” is literally the worst question you could ask me. So far in my existence I have never been able to answer that. Immediately I start panicking about not knowing my career path when it seems like all of my peers have known what they want to do since they started breathing.
I am not alone and you are not alone. I know I’m not the only one who has these feelings about not knowing what to do. It’s scary knowing that one day you will have to financially support yourself with a job that ideally you don’t hate. College is supposed to be the time where you develop the skills to be able to excel in that career. But sometimes I feel like I am not doing that.
But college isn’t just about developing career skills; it’s also about developing yourself. A lot of different things go into the development of a person, like passions and aspirations. It’s okay to not know where you are going because you have time to try everything that comes your way and slowly figure out those hidden passions.
Not knowing is even kind of exciting. Waking up every day not sheltered by one mind-set opens up a world of possibilities for you. You never know what a particular day will to bring to your development. Not knowing allows you to reach for every opportunity.
You don’t need to be sure in your late teens and twenties. This is a time for exploration. I have a cousin who paid her way through to school, getting a degree in fashion, in Los Angeles. She moved to New York City afterwards and worked her dream job in a public relations company. Seven years into "living the dream" in New York, she realized she wanted to do something else. At 26 years old, she quit her job and moved to Spain to become an English teacher. Even after school and thinking you know what you want to do, you can still change your mind. It’s just a matter of taking control of your own life.
Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for not having a set goal. Live your life at your own pace and the answers will come to you.
