I'll be the first person to tell you that I didn't have a horrible high school experience. I wasn't "popular" by any means but I also wasn't a stranger to my peers. I was friendly to everyone, and I made the best out of those painfully awkward four years. I was captain of the varsity cheer team, a member of the business club, a head member of student government and a member of a lot of miscellaneous clubs in between. I made some great memories, a few awesome friends. But honestly, I'm so ready to move on. High school wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. If I had to describe high school in a word, it'd be "eh".
Yes, I have a heart, I understand why graduating high school can be very difficult and emotional for some people. You're leaving your hometown and your friends that you grew up with, but let's be realistic, you'll probably see them the day after you graduate. Although it may be hard to leave your past behind, you're about to embark on such an awesome journey that really kicks high school's ass.
I never intended for high school to be the best years of my life. I believe that high school is a very important time to grow into your own skin, but it by no means should be the place where you had the best years of your life. You go in at 13, at that point, you've just barely dipped your toe into the pool of teenager-hood, and when you graduate, you're 17 or 18, barely dipping your toe into the pool of adulthood. You have four more years of fun (and schoolwork) to have the best years of your life. Don't waste that phrase on the four years in which you had braces, wore colored pants, and probably had some very questionable hairstyles.
So, when you're at your graduation, and all of your friends are crying about how sad they are to be graduates, remember that it's okay if you're secretly smiling to yourself about how excited you are for college. You don't need to feel awkward or ashamed of the fact that graduating high school has a very little effect on you. Everyone has a different reaction to change. College is just around the corner, and the best is yet to be.
