You've been through a lot...

To The Girl Who Needs To Love Herself
Courtney Urban

I get it, you’ve been through a lot.

Maybe the boy you just gave everything to decided to walk away without a word. Maybe the best friend you told everything to decided to turn her back on you. Maybe your family fell apart right in front of your helpless eyes. I’m here to tell you it doesn’t matter. Life is a complicated thing, more importantly life is a gift; life is a gift that should not be wasted with anger and hatred.

There comes a time in everyones life where they need to decide to forget everything bad that’s happened to them and move on with a full heart. If you cannot love yourself for who you are, you’ll have an inability to love others as deeply as I know you can. People keep asking the same question over and over again, where is the love? But the truth is, the love is in each and every single fiery soul. Sure you love your family, or your best friends, but what about loving yourself?

Is it impossible to love the way your eyes squint when you smile? Is it so bad that you sound like a hyena when you laugh hard? If you are unable to love every single piece about yourself, how on earth do you expect to know what you deserve? Your “stick” arms are beautiful. Your “rolls” are beautiful. Your “triple chin”, it’s beautiful. Your "flat" figure, it's beautiful. You are beautiful and it’s time you started loving yourself, your body, and your mind. Your mind is a beautiful thing, every dream, and every goal you’ve set for yourself has come from it. Every beautiful emotion you’ve felt has come from your mind. The powerful knowledge that hides within you is a creation from the beautiful mind you have.

The power of love, and art, and creativity, it's all stirring inside of you waiting to be released. You’re a beautiful, complex human being and for you love is an instinct, not a destination. So drive around alone and scream your lungs out to your favorite song. Go to the movies by yourself and make sure you eat that entire large popcorn (and don't forget the sour punch straws). Learn how to be alone, learn how to love it. There is no better company than your own, I promise.

I know it probably seems like the world is ending and you’re going through the worst possible thing anyone can go through, but love yourself through it. Remember what makes you happy, do that every single day. Dress up for no reason. Laugh loud and laugh hard just because you want to. Eat that bag of Hershey Kisses. Sign up for something you've never done before. Put your phone down, open the windows up, and indulge yourself in the life and opportunity that surrounds you. That backstabbing friend? She’ll get the karma she deserves down the road, life helps you out with that one. Are you having boy problems? Girl, do you know how many boys are on this planet? Trust me, his inconsistent personality, and awful taste in music was not worth your time anyways. Is it your family? Family is not defined by blood but by love. Remember that.

Whatever you’re going through, it’s not as bad as you think it is, I PROMISE! There is nothing more powerful than the love you give. Confidence and acceptance will only bring positivity and light into your life. Stop hating yourself for everything you’re not, and begin loving yourself for everything you are. You are strong. You are beautiful. You are wise. You are full of light and happiness. You are lovely.

You are perfect, and it’s about time you started believing it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
