On the day I am writing this, Americans are two days away from choosing our next President.
On the day I am writing this, people are stressed. They are fearful for the future.
On the day I am writing this, we do not know who our next President will be.
But on the day that you are reading this, we'll know.
This post is not going to be political at all... or at least, I won't be endorsing one candidate over the others. In fact, I'm not even voting. (Before you go all "civic responsibility" on me, my 18th birthday is two days after the election... Yes, I know it stinks.)
This post is a reminder that the world is not ending. This post is a reminder from the past, from a time when whomever you didn't want elected was not yet elected.
With our country so bitterly divided, a lot of people will be extremely disappointed no matter who is elected. Half of our country will be devastated if Donald Trump loses while the other half will be devastated if he wins... and the same for Hillary Clinton.
I get that it's scary. My political science professor said something in lecture the other day that was very ominous:
"We are playing with the collapse of our democracy."
While I see his point, I don't think our democracy will be collapsing anytime soon. Whichever candidate is elected will be seen as horrible by about half the country... but he or she will have been elected by the other half. No candidate will force his or her way into the White House. No candidate will take over the country and become a dictator. The next President of the United States, like every other one, will be voted in.
So no matter who is elected, don't worry... November 8, 2016 will almost certainly not be America's last election. In two years, we'll vote for Congress seats again. In four years, we get to choose a new President. (Because honestly, do you think either of these candidates will serve two terms?)
And if you're religious like me, remember that no matter who sits in the Oval Office, Jesus still sits on the throne... and He commands you to respect your rulers. And He also commands you to love and pray for your enemies, and unfortunately, you might consider whoever sits in the White House to be your enemy.
You'll probably be reading this about a week after Election Day. You'll have spent a week seeing negative posts despairing our country's future. You'll have spent a week dealing with your own feelings about the elected candidate. So this post, at least, will be a little optimistic:
Take a deep breath. Calm down, and know that America will be all right.
God bless America.
