An Open Letter To My Little
Samantha Vidnovic

Dear Little,

S, if we’re being honest, which we always are, I knew from the moment you walked through our doors, you were meant to wear our colors, share our joy and promote our philanthropy. I knew you were the missing piece our sisterhood needed so badly. It took less than a few minutes to realize you have an incredible heart with empathy far beyond your years, and I absolutely needed you in my life. With your witty humor and your genuine heart, I knew I wanted to call you a sister, but I also knew I wanted to call you my little. A few weeks later, as luck would have it, there we were: Big and Little!

We grew as sisters and obviously as big and little. From you finding your own way around Alpha Phi to making events so popular and successful, I couldn’t be more proud of you. This year, just like last, is about to fly by. I just want you to know that from here on out, through college and beyond, I’m always going to be here for you.

Let’s face it, college can suck. Who can you always rely on? Your sisters. And who can you always count on being there for you no matter what time or what’s going on? Your sisters. There’s a difference when you’re on campus to when you’re not though, and I’m sad this year is our last time to experience it together. Whether the future takes us, I know we’ll always stay close.

Who else have I ever jumped out from behind of an umbrella to surprise? Nobody but you! From the minute we became big and little, the fun hasn’t stopped. From April Reign festivities to Mother’s Day brunches and everything in between, we have made the most of college. You are truly the Dwayne Wade to my LeBron James; we have pictures to prove it. Your constant support and love means the world to me, and everything people say able what being a big really means is absolutely true. Helping you ease into a new school and seeing you succeed academically and within our chapter has made me really appreciate our big/ little bond. Having a strong support system that truly has your back makes any difficult goal seem attainable. Although at first you may have needed me, I have definitely needed you my fair share of times, too. Please always remember that I am eternally grateful for our friendship.

As we move into the new school year, a lot of change is coming our way. While it’s my senior year, I don’t know where next fall will take me, but just remember I’m always just a phone call (or Snapchat) away. We have to make the most of our time together, and make as many memories as we can. I promise to always have time for you, and you will always be a priority. I can’t wait to show you what recruitment looks like from the inside as you can finally share in the fun for the first time. You are already a wonderful representation of this chapter, and I know you will help us welcome new members with open arms. I can’t wait to start crafting for my future g-little, but I am more excited to see what a role model you continue to be as you finally become a big! Whenever this happens, whoever it may be, I will be your biggest cheerleader in your search to find someone who appreciates you just as much as I do, which I guarantee will not be hard to do!

As your junior year begins, you’ll reach new goals, face new challenges, and become even more independent than you already are. I am so happy to share this year with you, and for as dysfunctional as it sometimes seems to be, I can’t wait for all the fun that comes along with being a part of your Phi Fam.

Here’s to another great year, Little.

Your Big

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
