An Open Letter to My Big

I ran home on Bid Day, and then I ran home to you.

An Open Letter to My Big
Lillie Busch

Dear Big Sister,

When the Big and Little Reveal was announced, my heart leaped to my throat. Forget the pounding headache I had, and abandon all the homework waiting on my desk: this was it. I had my suspicions, my guesses, concerning who you would be. I tugged on the matching costume and took the appropriate pre-reveal selfies. To see you standing in the middle of the room, arms wide open, waiting for me, I was happy. I had run home on Bid Day, and here I stood, running home again to you.

Mainly, I am excited. We have such an adventurous future to look forwards to! When our schedules do coincide, when we find ourselves with free time to spend, imagine all of the shenanigans we will have! All the date parties; all the sorority fundraisers. Running out to grab a late dinner; potential sleepovers. Bonding over silly cat videos; procrastinating with Netflix. As a freshman, and as the first in my family to join a sorority, everything is brand new to me. I am so glad, so thankful, to have you as my guide and mentor. I will be constantly confused and endlessly fascinated, believe me.

For context, I am an only child, which is simultaneously a blessing and a curse. I never worried about sharing parental attention or clothes, but I also never experienced that cherished bond with a sister. You know, the special bond that Lifetime makes movies about and what Hallmark cards are for. As my sorority Big, you will introduce me to sisterhood; I will have an entirely new perspective of the concept and what it means. I can't wait to delve further into this sorority with you.

However, a Big and Little sisterhood is not merely you spoiling me or telling me where to park for home games. As your Little sister, I have a part to play as well. Your well-being is important to me. I promise to always be there for you; I will be on your side and in your corner, ready to fight for you. I promise to listen to you rant about an annoying classmate or your job. I promise to share your triumphs and falls as if they are my own. I promise to do my best to motivate you to make it through each day. College is composed of numerous mountains, numerous valleys, and piles of financial debt. We are climbing them all together. One step at a time in the biggest three-legged race.

In the end, our bond is special. Big and Little sisters -- that definition of sisterhood can not be found in Webster's dictionary. You are stuck with me until death; then again, however, I will probably haunt you.

With all the love in my heart,

Your Little

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
