An Open Letter To My Guy Best Friend

I am more myself with you than I am with anyone.

An Open Letter To My Guy Best Friend
Alex Kyllonen

Dear Guy Best Friend:

You are one of a kind, and I love every piece of you. No, we are not dating, and no, neither of us are in the "friend zone," though every time we go out in public, people seem to believe one of the two. I guess it doesn't help that we hold hands sometimes, or that we go to dinner and the movies together. But we just have that kind of relationship, and I can't help but laugh when people think we're in a relationship when in reality, it couldn't be further from the truth.

You have been one of my favorite people since our freshman year of high school. We share similar struggles, similar interests, and you always take my side, regardless of whether or not I'm right. I like our friendship because it's just like any other friendship, just without the drama. You tell me how it is, or how it isn't without hesitation and without the baggage that would generally come with other girls. With my girl friends, I feel like I am constantly walking on eggshells. I do not think I have ever felt that way with you, and that makes our friendship that much stronger. It's the most refreshing thing to have someone to turn to and not have to worry about how gross a conversation is, or whether or not my outfit matches when we go out, because chances are you wont notice anyway. I don't have to try and impress you. Sometimes it's nice to go out and just be comfortable, rather than be in a competition with other friends. I am more myself with you than I am with anyone.

There is no way to say this nicely; but going to different schools sucks. I don't have my personal bodyguard or my safe-person to turn to at any point of the day anymore. As much as I love our FaceTime calls, sometimes they just don't cut it. Though you can't physically restrain me like you used to when I'm about to make stupid decisions, you still have a way of knocking me to my senses, even through a phone call. I don't know how you do it, or how you've put up with me all these years. But I'm glad you have. I can always count on you for a good laugh that makes a bad day into something great. Only a special kind of person has that kind of power.

One thing I can always count on are our summer night drives blasting Alanis Morissette on our way to the Diner, where I can eat whatever I want because I know you won't judge me. We might not go to the same schools, but we have grown up in the same town, and after the school years come to a close, back to that town we will return. I can't wait to hear about your adventures, and tell you about mine. Every girl needs a guy best friend to keep her sane, I'm just glad that I have you as mine.

Sincerely,

Your Best Friend

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
