A Letter To My Future Roommates

I can't wait to share a bathroom and cry about The Bachelor with you next year

A Letter To My Future Roommates
Jessica Bartzick

Dear Best Friends,

To think that I had to live 18 years without you is quite terrifying. You all have helped me grow as a college freshman and I couldn't be more thankful. I thought that I was walking into my first semester with a steady best friend and a guarantee group of friends that would defy the freshman-friend-group stereotype of "best friends for two weeks until I find my real friends". I quickly found out that all the stereotypes are so true and I am so lucky to have found all of you second. You all have made this college transition so much easier. GO BEST FRIENDS, THEY'RE MY BEST FRIENDS.

Thank you for the random road trips.

Being so far away from home does get hard sometimes. I know that you are going through the same thing, so when we get the chance to drive away from campus with the windows down, blasting jams from 2000, fills the subsiding hole in my heart. Freshman year is tough especially when you move over 1,000 miles away from home. But with you, I will always have a piece of New York with me. From the drives to the next city over or just the beach, they are filled with adventure and desire for more. Random tanning days or chilling in the hammocks by the river are all soothing and I couldn't ask more of you guys. You know that a trip to clear my mind will help me feel better and you always follow through. Spontaneous trips will be even more common once we can actually room together.

You've truly changed my life

Our group chat is honestly my life line. That's where I find where we're eating lunch, when we're going to catch up on The Bachelor, and making sure everyone is alive come Sunday morning. I wouldn't be able to get through a three hour biology class without knowing I have you guys to complain about it to. I know I can always rely on you guys to help me with anything and everything. Thank you for telling me those shoes really shouldn't be worn with that shirt. Thank you for keeping my sarcasm in check. Thank you for being there as I cry into my salted caramel gelato. The random trips to Walgreens to pick up (disgusting) Cadbury eggs are always filled with giggles. Thank you for random sleepover's when we're all home in New York (because we obviously need to see each other a lot). Whenever I am feeling a bit down or stressed out from the demands of college, I can scroll through my camera and find endless silly selfies of us. They remind me of the happiest times and that I've truly found my place at college. You picked me and I picked you. I would not be the person I am, had I not known you. From the stupid remarks to the fighting over nothing, I can't wait to do it all while living only feet from you. I need you guys to know how freaking thankful I am. You all hate when I get sappy, but yes, shocker I know, I always do. Thank you for being my people.

Can't wait to see you at my wedding.

In 10...15... (hopefully not 20) years, you all will be front and center at my wedding. We all look pretty hot in dresses and heels so we should actually start planning that, right? From birthday bashes to Galentines day, I'll always have BFF's to get dressed up with and dance. Thank you for dancing with me. Thank you for encouraging me. Thank you for letting me grow as a friend, with your help. I am so excited for where next year will take us. I can't wait to binge watch shows and Venmo you all money because, of course, I don't have cash on me. You will always be my biggest supporters and cheerleaders. You make college that much easier. So here's to next year... and so many more.

P.S. this is also for the honorary future roommate, Precious the cat.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
