Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, not even yourself, because the truth is that you can. I’m going to take you through my experience this past week about how I was determined to do something that I am not familiar with doing, and how I was able to conquer it.
First off, I’m going to dive into what’s really important here. You need to know that you can do anything that you set your mind to, and I mean anything. If you think that you can swim, but aren’t very good at it, that doesn’t mean that you won’t ever be good at swimming. If you want to ice skate but you slip and fall backwards and land on you head to give yourself a concussion (yes, it’s happened to me), then maybe you aren’t the best at ice skating. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be, it just takes practice. It’s just like riding a bike; no one is perfect at riding a bike at a young age, but we move up from trikes to bikes with training wheels and finally to bikes with no training wheels. Do you see where I’m going with this? Good.
Truth is, if you aren’t good at something, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be, it will just take some practice. Don’t let anyone stop you from doing what you want to do.
As for people getting in the way of that, don’t even pay them the time of day. People are mean, and they are going to try and knock you down with anything they’ve got when they see you’re doing good. Don’t let them! Be strong and just let their comments roll off your shoulders. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are incapable of doing something, because you are more than you even know, and certainly more than they will ever know.
Now, onto my week long endeavor, and I should inform you that it was more of an inner turmoil with myself about being able to do something like this rather than others telling me I couldn’t. However, that kind of thinking also matters. You need to be able to believe in yourself that you can do things because if you’re not in the right mindset, you won’t be able to get to your results as soon as you could.
I was scrolling Pinterest as we all do and I was trying to find ideas on how to make your own jewelry holder. I needed something a little more practical than what I had already in my room so I took to scouting out ideas until I finally created the perfect image in my head of how I wanted to make my jewelry holder.
At first I didn’t know how to start. My vision was to have a wooden frame with a mesh panel in the back and hooks all along the sides to hang things on. Let me just say that I am nowhere near close to a carpenter. I will avoid as physical work as I can and contribute in other ways that are beneficial to a situation. That being said, I do like to do my own projects, but this was way out of my comfort zone, but I just wanted to know that I could do something like this.
I had people asking me, “Why does it have to be so complicated?” and “Why don’t you want any help?” which are fine questions to ask. My response was that I just had an idea and I wanted to see if I could just do it myself. So I got some scrap wood from one of my sister’s old projects, cut it down, fixed up some joints to make it fit together and got to work. There were so many times that I got so fed up that I wondered if I would ever finish the project that I started to doubt myself and think that I in fact couldn’t do it.
But lo and behold, it all came together in the end. I did reluctantly end up taking some advice from my dad and my boyfriend, both of which know more than a thing or two about these kinds of projects, and we had our disagreements but their help got me to the end of this project and I must say that it looks great. I was able to do it all on my own and I feel so good about it. Now I know that I can do that kind of work and I couldn’t be more proud of myself
