Chances are, you’re hitting up the beach, or a fun-filled place for spring break this year. If you’re anything like me, getting in shape isn’t always at the top of your priority list, especially being in school and having a never ending homework load. However, just a small commitment every week and a lot of positivity can take you a long way by March to get you results you’ll love!
Stop stressing
Yes, I know I can’t see you right now, but I know that you’re a beautiful human being with so much more going on with you than your looks. You’re smart, hilarious, and you’re friends love you for you, which means you should love yourself, too. So before you start getting into a workout plan, remember that you are meaningful and that regardless of the outcome, you shouldn’t be afraid to pull out your best bikini. If you want to get in shape, do so because you know you deserve it, not to make yourself better for others.
Make a plan
Now that you’ve started this with confidence, it’s time to make a fail-proof plan! When I start working out, I love to make a list of goals I’d like to see accomplished while I’m getting in shape. Usually I’ll put down goals such as “workout 3 times a week,” “drink plenty of water,” and “put down the sweets” (I have a huuuge sweet tooth so this one is usually a little harder for me!). When you have set goals in mind, it’ll give you the boost to actually want to live them out in your daily life. However, it’s totally okay if you don’t get to the point you had initially envisioned. As long as you’re trying your best and doing it completely for yourself, you really can’t be disappointed.
Dump your scale
It’s time for a major breakup… with your scale. While in theory it’s neat to see pounds melting away, it’s not realistic to put your self-worth into a set of numbers. If you’re gaining muscle and losing fat simultaneously, you also won’t see much of a difference on the scale, which can be confusing and disheartening. So instead of anxiously waiting to hop on the scale, look in the mirror. If you’ve been working out for months and the scale is “disappointing” but you think you look fantastic, then you look fantastic.
Partner up
Working out alone can be daunting, especially if you’re a newbie at the gym. The machines can be confusing, and the people look intimidating. However, bringing a friend not only keeps you accountable to your workout routine, but you won’t feel as nervous to embrace the gym life. For an extra boost of fun, go shopping together for new workout gear so you’ll both look fabulous for every training session, even when you’re working up a major sweat.
Remember, even if you have the “best” body in the world but don’t love yourself, then it’s not worth anything. You are more than a number, or the size on your jeans, or the food that you put in your mouth. Let your workouts stem from self-love and when spring break rolls around, it’ll be all worth it. Here’s a quote from Tyra, just to drive things home…
“Self-love has very little to do with how you feel about your outer self, it’s about accepting all of yourself.”
-Tyra Banks
