Because Finals Are Rough

Tips on Avoiding Burnout

Here we are back at finals, which in college, are characterized by lack of sleep, puppies on campus, and a good deal of coffee. Everyone is exhausted, everyone is stressed. But for some people...it’s more than that - maybe it’s an exhausted that hasn’t let up for the past few weeks. Maybe, for you, it’s stress that is so overwhelming that irritability is a commonplace reaction to everyone. Or maybe, it’s losing your cheerful disposition to depression, because life just won’t let up. My friends, unfortunately, if any of this sounds familiar...you might be experiencing burnout. It’s actually recognized by the psychological community, and includes all of the aspects above, and is defined as, “the result of severe, prolonged, mismanaged stress”. Some other notable characteristics are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, hostile, withdrawn, and self deprecating. Obviously, none of this is good. Unfortunately though, with the added pressure of finals, a lot of students experience this. However! We’re here to cover some ways to avoid burnout. Most importantly, by doing your best to manage your stress well - like using a planner of some sort to give yourself a realistic amount of time to study, or saying no to things that aren’t urgent. By being efficient with your time and rearranging your priorities, you will save yourself A LOT of grief. Next, please, don’t put so much pressure on yourself. It’s okay to have goals to do well and it’s okay to push yourself to attain them, but within reason. Good grades are good, but they aren’t everything. No need to catastrophize here. Put in the work, and trust that your grades will reflect that. Finally, be kind to yourself. In times of stress and pressure, it’s so easy to be self critical and neglect our own needs. But don’t be afraid to relax and care for yourself...in the long run skipping out on flash cards for a 20 minute bath will do you much more good than harm. Or not even that - just take time to care for yourself in whatever way works best for you! Please do it, though. This week can be challenging, but productive, if you take the right steps. Burnout is a horrible state to be in, and I’d hate to think of anyone else in it!

Be kind to yourself, guys.

Happy Finals

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
