5 Tips For Giving Your Dorm The Perfect Makeover

So you've just made the hectic move into your dorm. You're exhausted and you just want to collapse on your bed and take a nap. Your room looks incredibly plain, though; white walls, wooden floors, a bed, a closet, and a refrigerator. Decorations would definitely make your new dorm feel more at-home and less like a prison room. So let's get to decorating!

The best part about moving into a new place is decorating! You can add your own twist to the room, whether it's minimal or full of bright colors and decorations—the choice is yours! However, it can be a little tricky figuring out where to place something or how you're going to hang things on the wall (that no-nails rule is a tad difficult to work around). Here are some tips that can help make your decorating adventure quick and easy.

1. Coordinate.

Coordinating is extremely important when decorating, especially if you're a perfectionist like me. You should buy decorations that will match the overall theme of your room. For example, if you're doing an ocean-themed room, decorations such as a shell-shaped pillow or pictures of the beach would work. You would also want your decorations to be shades of blue, beige, and white, since those are common colors associated with the ocean.

2. Use inspiration.

Social media sites like Pinterest and Instagram are great places to pull inspiration from! You can find a lot of cute DIY decorations on Pinterest if you want to have a little fun with decorating, or you can use Instagram to find themes for a room or places to buy decorations. There are tons of other sites and blogs where you can find more inspiration, just Google a basic idea of what you want your dorm to look like and you're bound to find something.

3. Don't over-decorate.

Putting decorations all over your room can be fun, but don't overdo it. You don't want to have your walls cluttered in pictures and other decorations to the point where it looks like a jumbled mess. You also don't want to have a bunch of extra decorations lying around your room with nowhere to go. To avoid this, only bring a few decorations that really bring out the theme of your room.

4. Placement is key.

Placement can be an easy task, but it is also a very important one. Make sure your decorations aren't placed haphazardly around your room and that they look organized. If you want to put up a bunch of pictures on your wall, try placing them in rows instead of putting them in all sorts of different places. This makes your wall look organized and is a very cute way of decorating it. If you brought decorative pillows, make sure they are placed in a group at the corner of your bed instead of being strewn out all over your bed. Easy, right?

5. Command Strips are your best friend.

Colleges have a no-nails rule in their dorms to avoid damages to their walls. That's understandable, but how are you supposed to hang up all of your inspirational quotes on your walls now? Don't worry, Command Strips have you covered. Command Strips are the perfect work-around for the no-nails rule. They come in many different shapes, sizes, and uses; you're guaranteed to find one that will help you hang up your decorations.

I hope at least one of these tips were helpful in your decorating endeavors! Good luck, and may your dorm room look as fabulous as you are!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
