40 Thoughts From The Day Before The New Semester

Before every new semester a fleeting and usually polar array of emotions will grip every student on campus. For seniors, it's the last first day of class. For people that didn't do so well in the fall, it's the first day to begin bringing that GPA up before your parents yank you out of an expensive private school to attend the local community college. For science students, it's annoyance at scheduling classes and labs in any way that will get you a Friday off. And although our feelings may differ on the specifics, I'm sure we all have some common ground on those particular thoughts you spin through on the dreaded day before the semester. This is my story.

1. I can't believe this is my last day of break. Where did it go?

2. Why does my mom need me to help her in the form of manual labor on the last day of break?

3. I must savor every moment of today like it's my last.

4. Never mind, manual labor sucks. Please be over soon.

5. How is it already 5 p.m.?

6. Crap, what books do I need?

7. Why aren't any of the books I need available for rent on Amazon (or anywhere else)?

8. I wonder if I can use an earlier edition?

9. Why are books so expensive? I should start protesting about this... I mean, $400?

10. Where am I going to get the money for these books? I mean, four books for one class...

11. I'm going to hit up Facebook and see if that professor even uses a book...

12. After I have dinner.

13. I'm going to go to sleep earlier this semester.

14. I'm going to go organize my study area.

15. After a game of "Call of Duty."

16. Whoops, I better get that book list together.

17. Oh look, I have Facebook notifications.

18. That show on Netflix looks really good.

19. Okay, only one episode.

20. Another one.

21. I'm sure we aren't using books on the first day, so I'm going to just worry about that tomorrow.

22. I'm going to work out every school day this semester.

23. I'm going to get my scheduler organized before bed tonight so I'm ready to go in the morning.

24. After this episode.

25. Why is break over?

26. Can I make a good living without college?

27. Why did I pick a science major? Labs suck!

28. Do I really want to be a doctor?

29. Yes, of course! Time to organize!

30. After one more episode...

31. Oh my god, how is it midnight?

32. Why are 8 a.m. classes a thing?

33. I wish I wasn't a commuter.

34. Why did I chose an 8 a.m. class?

35. Oh right, I'm at a small, private school that only offers Immunology at one time.

36. Okay, I'm going to sleep. I'll get up early and get my stuff together before class.

37. Eh, it's the first day of classes. One more episode should be fine.

38. While half asleep: Those books really are too expensive.

39. In one more year, I'll be starting my last semester.

40. That finale was insane!

So here we are on our first day of school, and I've already broken my vows to go to sleep early and be organized. But, I do have a work out date scheduled so it's not an entire loss. I hope everyone has a great first day, especially the seniors out there that are having their last first day as an undergraduate. Congratulations on all your hard work!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
