More often times than not, you hear people talking about the friendships they developed in college. College is the time where you cross paths with many different people over the course of four years, and if you have the opportunity to live on campus, chances are you’re going to develop some type of relationship with your roommate(s). Whether you already know you’re roommate and you two become even closer, or you’re meeting them for the first time, I hope these people are the people you’re still friends with 20 years down the road. Having a strong connection and being able to be your complete self with the people you live with makes living away from home much easier and school much more enjoyable. So, roommate, this one is for you.
Thank you for making the transition from home life to dorm life a lot easier than I thought it would be. I remember the thoughts running through my mind as I thought about what it would be like to have a roommate- ‘What if she’s crazy? What if she thinks I’m crazy? What if she doesn’t like my bunny slippers?’ Now the only thing I think about is how lucky I am to have someone to match my level of craziness. When you can proudly sit in your pajamas, shoving handfuls of popcorn into your mouth while laughing at a baby laughing on Youtube at midnight, you know you two are meant to be roommates.
Thank you for having my back and telling me the truth about how off-point my eyeliner is. But even more so, thank you for helping me fix my eyeliner so it’s now on-point. I know I can always count on you to give me honest advice, even if I don’t want to hear it. Whether it be that I could do better than that guy from my 8 a.m. class, or that I need to change the sweater I’m wearing because it’s definitely time to put it in the laundry, you never sugarcoat anything, and I appreciate that. Sometimes the truth is hard to hear, but when it comes from someone I trust, it’s a lot easier to bare.
Thank you for keeping me on track, especially when it comes to homework. Thank you for taking away my cell phone when I’m Snapchatting instead of doing my research paper. Thank you for not judging me when I eat two dinners. Thank you for hating my ex just as much as I do. Thank you for being the best roommate there is on campus.
I hope that, ten years from now when I’m walking down the aisle about to say “I do”, that you’re standing next to me. And if my life doesn’t end in that fairytale-like way, I hope you’re still sitting next to me in my one-bedroom apartment, helping me groom my ten cats. But I know one thing is for sure- you can’t undo the countless memories we have together, even if some of them are ones we wish we didn’t remember. But hey, after all, this is college life, and what is college without some not-so-smart decisions with your roommate?
See you when you get back to the dorm!
