To quote Anne of Green Gables, "I'm so glad to live in a world where there are Octobers."
October not only brings Fall Starbucks drinks and leggings, but also the promise of hope for many women across America. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and for an entire month, everything is pink like the inside of a Barbie Dream House. But this color holds a special place in the hearts of Zeta Tau Alphas everywhere, because this color symbolizes our philanthropy, and October gives us an amazing opportunity to host events on campus that showcase our commitment to our philanthropy, and our love for each other.
This year, our national counsel has chosen brand new partners to join us in the fight against breast cancer. Zeta Tau Alpha is now partnered with the American Cancer Society, the National Football League, and Bright Pink, an organization that focuses on educating women about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and they also pair women battling breast cancer with a survivor to mentor them through the process. With a team like this, Zetas everywhere are destined to do great things this October.
According to the Zeta Tau Alpha national website, "Since 1992, ZTA members have distributed 10 million BSE shower/breast health tip cards, 11.2 million "One in Eight" breast self-examination stickers, and 14 million pink ribbons." However, there's more to those numbers than meets the eye. The materials that Zetas pass out during their Think Pink Weeks has the potential to save lives. 10 million breast health brochures means 10 million opportunities for early detection of breast cancer. Seeing a pink ribbon on someone's bag or jacket might remind someone to schedule a mammogram or perform a self examination. Having 14 million pink ribbons out in the world makes a serious impact on everyone's lives.
Since one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, it is a disease that truly effects everyone. Everyone will be affected by breast cancer at some point in their life, everyone will know someone who has fought it. By supporting Zeta Tau Alpha and their philanthropic efforts, you are making a serious change in someone's life. Not only does Zeta raise thousands of dollars every year to help find a cure for breast cancer, but they also participate in events that put them in direct contact with breast cancer survivors and women who are currently fighting breast cancer. Supporting these women and being with them in fellowship is a very sobering experience, but one that truly enriches the college experience. Listening to these strong women and learning from them is inspiring and empowering, and is often the highlight of Think Pink Week for many sisters.
Supporting Zeta's Think Pink Week not only helps to improve the lives of the survivors, but also enriches the lives of the participants. Be on the look out for information regarding your own college's Think Pink Week, and get ready to support a cause that many future generations can benefit from for years to come.
