I recently watched this video that struck me as an interesting project, something even I would consider doing around Kent's campus. Shea Glover, an 18-year-old from Chicago, did something that I would have never thought of doing before. She went around to people she knew and others she didn't to create a school project centered around things she found beautiful. At first, the individuals thought that they were just posing for a portrait, until Shea told them that the point of her project was to photograph things she finds beautiful.
Their reactions are mostly the same. Some were embarrassed, some were happy, some were upset, some were even grateful that someone would call them beautiful, as they do not necessarily hear it often. However, what I found most beautiful in this video were the smiling reactions Shea received from everyone. Being beautiful is something everyone should wake up to realize that no matter how you look, no matter how judgmental or self-conscious you are, you are beautiful. No one is perfect and I believe Shea saw these imperfections as things of beauty. Shea is showing that no matter your color, race, gender identity, or the way you wear your clothes, you are still beautiful. Who cares how you look as long as you are comfortable in your own skin?
I think being told you are something I find beautiful is something every individual should get to hear every day. Just think of the positive vibes you would feel from being told that you are beautiful. Even if you are a manly man, being called handsome counts, too. Doesn't that make you smile to know that someone else finds you beautiful? No one was created the same, so as unique individuals we have to grasp our flaws and see them as the beauty others or even yourself would see.
Even nature resembles humans as well in that each tree, each flower, each rock, each creature is created slightly differently. Nature is a reflection of "the things I find beautiful" and that can be found in us, too. Maybe someone reminds you of this flower you saw in a valley or of the ocean in the Bahamas. Whatever it is, that thing or being is beautiful. There are a lot of beautiful things in this world, and I think telling a stranger this could lighten their day.
