So far, it's only snowed a few times since the start of this Winter season, so we can expect there to be some more snow days (maybe not the kind college kids beg for though). In 2010, I remember the blizzard during Christmas that lasted several days. Flights were cancelled, airports closed, roads became blocked....you know, the whole shebang. I also remember how my family used that time to have some fun indoors.
Since it was the holidays, we had twenty people over (yikes!) but we still managed to have a lot of fun. So, if you find yourselves stuck during another snowstorm or cold weather (either will do), here are a few fun activities that I guarantee will get the party started (and by party, I mean that will help everyone stay sane).
1. Board Games
These never fail to entertain a crowd. There are tons of board games out there for adults, for children, and for the family. Whether its Operation, where everyone tries and fails at being a surgeon, or Monopoly, where everyone fights over the rules and the game ends up scattered across the floor. Board games gets everyone involved and is a fun way to pass the time (even if there's arguing, but what family doesn't?).
Movie Binges
Whether it's a series the whole family agrees to watch or a genre of movies pre-approved for the kiddies, this a great way to keep the sanity in check when it's snowing outside. Some examples are Harry Potter or the Pirates trilogy (because any movies after the third one should never be talked about). Popcorn and other goodies are, of course, encouraged, and if everyone gathers around the living room in their pjs, that only makes it better.
Card Games
These types of games are different because rules are simpler and all you need is a deck of cards. From games like Spoons and Golf, these provide all-around family fun and they can last hours, if everyone is dedicated to win at least once (but let's face it, we all want to win all the time).
Bake
This one is my favorite because I love to bake. Cakes, brownies, cupcakes, muffins, cookies, you name it. If you can't get cake mix from the box (because, you know, you're stuck at home), there are recipes online to make the mix from scratch. This is especially great when trying to entertain the kids. They decorate the cookies or the cake however they want and it's fun for the whole family.
Play "Guess That Song"
This is, by far, my favorite game of all time because it tests everyones knowledge of the evolution of music in a very unique way. The rules are simple: depending on the age of each participant, they have to guess songs from the 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s. So, parents would guess from 2000s and 2010s while kids would have to guess from 80s and 90s. The tracks are selected by the other team (so the ones guessing don't know what they're listening to) and they have three tries to guess both the song and the artist. On the first try, they have 3 seconds to listen to the song. On the second try, they have 5 seconds. And on the third try, they have 15 seconds. There are tons of youtube videos that explain this better, but it's a lot of fun.
Snow can be so much fun to play in. I love Winter and I live for snowy days when I can make a snow angel and a snowman and have a snowball fight. But when the temperature drops and you have to stay inside, I hope these activities will keep you company!
