Things That No One Tells You About Living Off-Campus

It's harder to get places, for one.

Things That No One Tells You About Living Off-Campus

As a freshman and/or sophomore, you couldn't wait to get out of the dorms and get living off-campus. You longed for more space, your own kitchen, maybe a full-sized bed, and your own room. You couldn't wait for a clean shower where you didn't have to wear flip flops, and a common space that you only had to share with a few roommates instead of a whole floor. However, there are some things that you actually find yourself missing about the dorms once you get off-campus (even though you still wouldn't go back there). Here are some things that no one tells you about living off-campus in college.

You will have to become way more of an adult.

You have to start grocery shopping, meal-planning, budgeting, cooking and cleaning. Your dorm bathrooms got cleaned for you but now if your bathroom is gross you can only blame yourself. You have way more space than half of a room to keep clean, and you need to cook all your own meals and grocery shop rather than relying on a dining hall.

You most likely need your own transportation and have to wake up and leave your apartment earlier.

While on-campus, you could roll out of bed at 7:40 for your 8 am and still grab a bagel in the dining hall. Now you have to allow time to drive or walk onto campus, or make the bus on time. It takes longer to get to class and to get to anything on campus and you have to allot for that.

You don't know of all the parties like you used to.

Living in the dorms, you just somehow hear about all of the parties happening every weekend, but when you live off-campus you start to hear of less and less unless they are being thrown by your friends. You end up going to the bars every weekend and spending more money instead.

It's harder to meet people.

Sure you still have your classes, but living in dorms is a super easy way to constantly meet new people. Once you are off-campus you still meet people, but it just happens less often.

So there you have it. In my opinion there are still way more perks to living off-campus (more space, more peace and quiet, better kitchen amenities, choosing the people you live with), but these are some things that no one tends to tell you before you move off-campus and experience them for yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
