We walked by these houses during our freshman year, gazing in awe of the massive manner-type sorority chapter, with greek letters proudly hanging from the front of each, unique with a style that helps set them apart from the rest of Greek Row. I remember wondering what kind of things happen when you live with sixty other college girls who all double as your best friends. I imagined that it would be something out of a movie. However "Legally Blonde," "Sydney White," and Netflix's "Greek" were no help to prepare me for what I discovered actually goes on while living here.
1. When you live in, you love giving house tours to anyone that slightly glances at your glorious mansion passing by during a campus tour or football game weekend because you are crazy proud of where you live.
Welcome to my crib. Allow me to show you around.
2. When you live in, you learn how to share.
When we say your closet multiplies by sixty when you move in...we are serious.
mi armario es su armario. (shoutout to Google translator)
3. When you live in, you overcome being a light sleeper.
Ahhh nothing like the sweet lullaby of rap music from greek row, girls next door singing some sort of Whitney Houston karaoke, or cars driving by outside as I lay my head on this pillow to try and fall asleep. I can probably sleep through almost anything now.
4. When you live in, you learn to be punctual.
Dinner is at 5:00pm—you get there at 4:50pm because no one dare pass you in line when it is corndog Friday.
5. When you live in, you become a little too close with your sisters.
When I say close I mean shower parties every night close, bras are optional close, and grey suits are encouraged close.
6. When you live in, you realize that the freshman fifteen was nothing compared to living in a sorority with a chief whom specialty is mac n’ cheese.
I present to you, the sophomore sixty.
7. When you live in, there is no privacy and you learn to love it.
Yes, you have your space when you need it most, but what’s the fun in sleeping in your own bed?
I was never a talker until I moved into my sorority. Now they can't get me to shut up...Whoops.
9. When you live in, you become the "honorary friend" in your floormate's relationship with their Significant Other.
Table for three? What are we feeling tonight guys? Pizza? Thai? Movie night?
10. When you live in, it is impossible to have a 'bad day' because you know someone is gonna make you smile when you walk out of your room.
I can't stay mad with a face like that.
11. When you live in, you realize that laughing until you feel a six-pack is a completely acceptable excuse to not go to the gym.
Why go to the gym when you can force girls to try on those extra adult diapers from your Halloween costume last year and model them over their sweats? --You burn the same number of calories laughing anyways.
12. When you live in, you also realize how much you have been missing without an endless amount of pizza sticks and bagels in your kitchenette.
It only takes 3 minutes of my time and a microwave to make this girl happy after a night out.
13. When you live in, you have all of your best friends down the hall to run to when life seems too hard, boys break your heart, or if you ever just want vent about your day.
...and trust me this is big. Because let's be honest boys suck sometimes (most of the time).
14. When you live in, you learn that this isn't what a sorority is really like...
Nope. 15. or this...
Not even close.
16. or this...
Oh sorority stereotypes, so naive.
17. In fact, when you live in-- this is a more authentic representation of my what chapter is like.
You already know that this is my element, and I thrive at those dance battles.
18. and this...
19. and definitely this...
These are my people.
20. Lastly, when you live in a sorority house you solidify friendship, create memories, laugh, and smile more than you thought was humanly possible because it really is that much fun. This is where the "best years of your college career" stem from.
I love you, ladies. Thanks for being the best sixty+ roomies I could ever imagine.
