When you go away to school and leave home, most of the time it's a wonderful thing. Being on your own and living your own way is a great experience. You get to live with your friends and learn what it's like to be an adult living away from home. But, no matter how great living away from home is, there are things that you miss at home.
1. Home-cooked meals.
Sure, you might cook your own meals in your place, but there is nothing better than having your parents cook for you. Being in college and being that "broke college student," you don't always have the money to buy the best ingredients to make all of these meals you want to. But, when you're at home, your parents buy everything they need to make you a delicious meal. Plus, you don't have to cook, it's all done for you. You just need to eat and enjoy!
2. Being taken care of when you're sick.
In my opinion, there is nothing worse than being sick when you're away from home. All I ever want when I'm sick is for my mom to take care of me, make me soup, and to make me happy when I'm feeling gross and down. So, being away from home and not having your parents take care of you can be kind of upsetting.
3. Family.
It's true that sometimes family can get on your nerves more often than not. But, being away from them and not getting to live with them all the time really makes you miss them. You get so used to being around your family your whole life and then are expected to pick up and leave them if you decide to go away for college. Yes, at first it seems like it's a great change to be living with friends instead of family, but after a little you will start to miss them more than you thought you would.
4. Friends.
You have your friends at school, the ones that you see on a daily basis. But, being away from home means that you don't get to see the friends that still live in your hometown and the friends that went away to a different school than you. The ones you knew from your childhood and from the time you spent in high school. But, the good thing is that when you go home for the big breaks, most of the time all the other schools are on break too, allowing for your old friends to be home with you.
5. Your favorite places.
After living at home your whole life up until going away to college, you start to develop favorite places. Restaurants, parks, stores, hangouts, trails, friends houses. There is so much that can become your favorite places that leaving them behind when you go to college can be hard. You don't get to hangout in the places that you love and want to spend time at. But when you do get to go home and go to those places, it makes all the waiting worth while.
So, yeah, being away from home and living on your own is great and an amazing experience. But you will miss home, no matter how much you tell yourself you won't.
