As we get older and technology gets more advanced, we tend to look back at things that we used during our youth that are now obsolete. VCRs. Floppy discs. Phones with cords. Besides the technological differences between my childhood and young adult life, there are also many other changes that have taken place because of just growing up. Here are the things I miss most from my childhood.
1. Capri Sun Juice Pouches
Even though I would finish one in under three seconds and still be dying of thirst.
2. Playing "The Oregon Trail" on my desktop computer.
I always managed to be bitten by a rattlesnake and killed about halfway through.
3. Writing out a Christmas list.
Traditions like visiting Santa at the Mall and leaving milk and cookies out on the kitchen table are also sorely missed.
4. The glory days of Disney Channel.
It was always a dream of mine to draw the outline of a mouse head into the air with my glowing baton and declare "I'm Jackie and you're watching Disney Channel".
5. Wearing gigantic bows in my hair every single day and having people think it was cute.
I also had more frightening hair accessories like a puffy snow ball with a face on it and a pink and purple monstrosity of a hair clip in which thousands of spiral ribbons dangled.
6. Smiley Face shaped french fries in the school cafeteria.
They just looked so happy to exist it was almost heartbreaking to eat them.
7. Playing scooter tag in gym class.
Playing games with the huge parachute is a close second.
8. Riding around in a pink Barbie Jeep.
I actually would get out the hose and soap and do proper car washes for my Barbie Jeep, I was very invested in its wellbeing.
9. Using projectors and lamination sheets in class.
With the special markers that could be wiped off of the lamination sheets.
10. Receiving toys with my Kids Meals.
I once got a light up "Lord of the Rings" goblet that I still use to this day.
11. Calling friends on the landline in order to set up "playdates".
I had all of my friends' phone numbers and addresses memorized to call them at a moments notice or to mail them birthday invitations.
12. Buying Popsicles from the ice cream truck.
Push pops and snow cones are a glorious thing.
13. Having thousands of stuffed animals and Beanie Babies at the foot of my bed while I slept.
Now I only have my stuffed cat Adelaide, a sock monkey and a chicken wearing a Trinity sweater.
14. My snow globe collection that I kept on my highest shelf.
I had a pretty impressive collection until the devastating moment when they all crashed to the floor and shattered into a million pieces, just like my heart.
15. Easter egg hunts with my cousins on Easter morning.
I also remember being too small to reach one at the top of the lamp post in my front yard, and my older cousin plucking it easily off the top and running away.
16. Being something completely weird or random for Halloween and planning it out for weeks instead of throwing something together last minute.
We thought we were the coolest kids on the block.
