Though my family is not 100 plus, we might as well be. We have our loud moments, our obnoxious moments but most importantly we always have our laughing moments. I came from a relatively big family, one that I would not trade or change for the world. I have never been more thankful for this family than I am when I am away. Here are some of the things, this crazy, big, and loving family of mine taught me growing up.
1. No matter the age difference, you are still family.
I am the youngest of the entire—and I mean entire—family. I have about 15 years separating me from the oldest cousin, and about 60 years separating me from my grandpa. But what I have always been reminded, is that, we are a family, and nothing, not the age gap, gender difference, geographical location, can change that.
2. You can never have too much food.
Honestly, that isn’t even a possibility. Now my family, we eat, a lot, and I wouldn’t change that. My grandma makes the best food and I don’t think we have ever gone the next two days without having to eat leftovers. But, we don’t mind, it’s just as good the second time around.
3. Hand-me-downs are a definite thing.
Don’t even think about buying that new dress, because I guarantee you, someone probably has one that will do just fine for whatever occasion. Though they were annoying, as I got older I started to appreciate the clothes because half the time I sucked at fashion.
4. No matter what, if you are the youngest, you are the favorite.
Alright, maybe I am biased, but hey, I am the favorite. You are the baby, you are bound to be the favorite because you are the last one standing. I don’t deny it. I will gladly accept the random gifts and favoritism. It only helps. After all, being the baby is a tough job. You have to rough it out with everyone else just so you can survive. You obviously need a little pampering.
But, no matter what you learned from your big or small family there is always one rule that never seems to change.
You love each other with a love that is unbreakable and undeniable. You can’t get away from these people so you might as well enjoy their company. Whether that be on the Comal River, a farm, a Chicken Fried Steak Restaurant in the middle of nowhere or simply at home, you love each other and enjoy the moments you have.
