I come from the generation of doers, thinkers, feelers and all the in betweeners. My generation is the one that will change the world — from the environment to our ever-depleted government productivity. My generation is the one that the world turns to when things need to be fixed. My generation is the one that has lived through more historical revelations than one can fathom. So, why are we the ones that always get spit on?
People are so quick to blame our generation for being lazy or for being greedy beyond our means. But in reality, we are the generation who will be the first to grow up with technology at our fingertips and the generation that knows how to get what they want on demand. We are the ones that have changed the thinking behind a college degree; it's something almost everyone tries to get now. We have paved paths for ourselves that weren't there before. My generation is wrongfully blamed as the one that is too involved with social media and the technology craze. How is it such a bad thing to be able to connect with hundreds of other people at any time of the day simply by a small piece of metal and plastic we carry around in our pockets?
My generation is constantly being blamed for wanting their bank account to be big and their happiness with life small. We have been told our whole lives to follow our dreams and do what we want. But when we do that and become successful, it’s not right. How is my success different from yours? My generation is full of people who want to strive and make the world a better place, so they spend hours fixing what other generations have messed up.
There are so many fingers constantly ready to point at one another when we discuss big issues with the world like climate change or poverty. Little do people realize that my generation will be the one to fix the problems of the earth and the hunger of the poor. We are the ones with the fresh ideas and the dedication to make it a better place than the one left for us.
I have never met a more open-minded generation than my own. We accept who people love regardless of gender. We accept all races, and we encourage diversity in our world. We are raised on the idea that that our world is meant for everyone, and that is how we are going to keep it.
My generation has lived to see the fall of the Twin Towers, a recession, our first black president, Osama Bin Laden’s death and hundreds of other events that are being written in history books as we speak. There is no valid argument for someone to say that my generation doesn’t understand the world. We have been thriving in an ever-changing culture that will need us the older and older we get.
So quit saying my generation has a problem, because we are the solution.
