There’s this idea that once you start college you suddenly understand your purpose in life. In movies, there’s always that one college freshman who picks their major and sticks with it all throughout undergrad and then throughout graduate school as well. Then, by the end of the movie that timid freshman who majored in biology is now a full-fledged doctor.
Well, I hate to break it to you, but picking your major doesn’t work that way. There are definitely some people who declare their major early on, never change it, and then blissfully proceed with their life as if deciding a major was a blessing and not a curse. But, for the majority of college students, it’s a curse.
Just kidding! But picking a major is certainly not an easy task and it's okay to be confused about what to choose. Not every student knows from the very beginning what career they want to enter into upon completion of college and that’s totally understandable. I mean, I don’t even know what color I should paint my nails let alone what I want to do for the rest of my life.
And that’s another thing, I guarantee you that the first job you get right out of college will not be your last, there is always a plethora of careers that fall under every major. Don’t stress about career choices and job options, opportunities will be presented to you throughout your life, it’s not something you need to be worried about when you’re 20 years old.
What it really comes down to when deciding your major is to find something you love and stick with it. I know that same advice has probably been given to you time and time again, but in all honesty, it's true. If you major in something that excites you and makes you want to put in effort into whatever you’re doing, then you’re on the right path.
And for those of you who are reading this thinking “I just want to make money,” I know exactly how you feel because I used to be so consumed with the idea of being wealthy once I graduated college that I forgot to focus on what I truly love to do.
However, what I’ve realized lately is that if you major in something that interests you, then you’re going to put time and energy into your career, and that will be recognized by somebody at some point and you will be compensated for you steady dedication.
Life is already complicated enough as it is and there’s no need to further complicate it by forcing yourself to pick a major because you feel like you have no other choice. Stop comparing yourself to your friends, just because they have already declared a major doesn’t mean you have to as well. Deciding a major doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. In fact, it should be a great opportunity for you to chase whatever career path you want.
So, here’s my advice to you, college student: take as much time as you want to figure out what you love and until then, it’s okay not know, don’t panic.
