The Truth About Mental Health
Sherri Smith

In this time, more people than ever are being diagnosed with a variety of different mental disorders. Depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders are just a few of the many illnesses that people are being diagnosed with today. However, these victims may not be aware that there are many more options in our age to fight these mental illnesses.

Mental illnesses not only affect your brain, but they can take control of your entire body. When a person is depressed, they continually stay sad and have very little motivation to finish everyday tasks. Many times people who struggle with this illness refuse to get help because of the stigma surrounding people that have problems with their mental health. In extreme cases, it drags out long enough to where victims even consider or attempt killing themselves so they do not have to hurt and be ridiculed anymore.

I am here to inform you that your illness is a completely normal thing! There are millions of people in the United States who suffer from the problems that you might also be facing. Please, get out there and tell people that you are struggling. Counsellors are now being trained intensely trained because of the growing numbers of these illnesses. Someone out there can help you so you will not give up on yourself!

I'm sure you are wondering why you should listen to some random outsider that is only looking to get views and shares on an article.

My main reasoning is a very simple statement.

I want you to know that someone cares.

Even if it is just some random outsider from a college writing website, your problems matter. To stretch it even further, your lives matter and I don't want anyone to ever feel like that isn't true. Life is a beautiful gift that I do not want you to miss out on! I, too have been through this and took the necessary steps to move past it so that I can send the love and compassion that others like me may need.

I'm not so naive as to think this article can help save lives, but I hope it will at least raise awareness. I hope that anyone that might be struggling can read this and know that someone understands and someone does care because you never really know what it may take to help change someone's mind that is considering suicide. I challenge you to go out into the world with a clean heart and show people the love that we were meant to receive. Together, the people of this world can work together and change lives by giving the love that everyone needs.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
