It's a new year which means new music, albums and tours. (I know I'm sure looking forward to Adele's new tour). This new year also means artists who've dominated the charts this past year are taking a break. Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and One Direction, three of music's biggest names, are all taking a year or more off starting now. But before the new music of 2016 drops, let's take a look back at the top 10 songs of 2015 according to the Billboard Top 100 chart.
1. "Uptown Funk" - Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars
No surprise that "Uptown Funk" is number one overall for 2015. When this song first came out, it was an immediate hit. The Jackson 5/ 70s vibe this song and music video has makes it catchy and great for blasting in the car with the windows down.
2. "Thinking Out Loud" - Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran made all of our hearts swell with this hit from his album "X". Between the touching lyrics and the ballroom dance music video, in which Sheeran himself does the elegant dancing, this song was bound to be hit across the board.
3. "See You Again" - Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth
This hit was recorded as a tribute to "Fast and Furious" star, Paul Walker, who tragically died in an accident earlier in the year. The song it isn't your typical ballad tribute song, but still pulled at the heartstrings of people everywhere. Whether you were a fan of the "Fast and Furious" series, or just knew surface information of the films, this song touched everyone who listened.
4. "Trap Queen" - Fetty Wap
1738 is probably the most talked about year because of this song. It's always playing in clubs and in college dorms. It's definitely a college anthem. You could hear the people above you playing it as they get ready to go out on a Saturday night or maybe it was your room that was blasting it. Either way, you could most definitely hear this song being played on the weekends on college campuses.
5. "Sugar" - Maroon 5
Maroon 5 will never die. They were big when I was 7 and they're big when I'm 19. There was not a time that I was in the car and this song didn't come on the radio at least once. It makes me want to sing along however, it was always a struggle because Adam Levine has a higher vocal range than I do. Not to mention 98 percent of the time, I'd be screaming the song so it didn't matter anyway.
6. "Shut Up And Dance" - Walk the Moon
This was the song of the summer. It was constantly on the radio and every time it came on, the volume went up and the windows went down. My hands would bang on the steering wheel to the spectacular beat and I would be screaming at the top of my lungs. I don't know if anyone else did that but it was always a good time. This song put Walk the Moon on the map and they've been riding smooth ever since.
7. "Blank Space" - Taylor Swift
Ms. Swift has done it again, folks. This song was a huge hit this year. She has said this song is painting the character the media makes her out to be, which is an excellent way to handle the backlash of being a young woman in the spotlight trying to have relationships like any other normal person would be doing at Swift's age. This song is one of her many hits this year and I'm sure this next year or so will be different with her on break for a little bit.
8. "Watch Me" - Silento
This song has changed dancing for life. Now everyone "whips" and "nae-nae's," whether it's to this song, or to a song that has a great beat. You can find people whipping and nea-neaing everywhere.
9. "Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)" - The Weekend
It's funny because I'll see the title of a song and not know what it is but then I'll go listen to it and be like "oh yeah, I know this." That's how it was with this song. I've only heard it on the radio, but I know half of it because it's always on the radio. Especially with it being on the "Fifty Shades of Grey" soundtrack.
10. "The Hills" - The Weekend
This is one of the songs that when it comes on the radio, I'll be driving and trying to low-key dance to it because it just has that beat that's perfect for hip and body rolls.
If these are the top 10 songs of 2015, I can only imagine what 2016 has in store for the music industry.
