If you’re the
oldest child, then you can agree that it definitely has its advantages: getting
to do everything first, not ever having hand-me-downs and knowing your parents
the longest. However, you know that there are also some serious disadvantages
to being the first born. Here are struggles every oldest child can relate to.
1. You're expected to always demonstrate responsibility.
Being the oldest means you’re supposed to set an example, and you know this because whenever you do anything wrong, you’re reminded by your parents that your siblings look up to you (as if they’ve never made a mistake you didn’t).
2. You're the only one who had a curfew.
You vividly remember your 10 p.m. curfew, yet you watch as your younger siblings stroll in hours after.
3. You had to beg for a cell phone.
You had to wait until you were 12 to have one, but your younger sister had one at 11, and you’re even younger brother had one at 8 (I’m still bitter).
4. You are always to blame.
It doesn’t matter what the situation is or who’s really to blame, but you are always the one who gets in trouble just for being the oldest. I can’t tell you how many times the phrase, "You're the oldest; you should know better," has been uttered to me in the last 19 years.
5. You've been called "bossy."
You tell people you’re the oldest, and they’re not at all surprised. Hey, it’s not your fault you were taught how to be “mommy’s little helper” at a young age.
6. You're the on-call babysitter.
Growing up, you were always expected to babysit whenever your parents had to go somewhere (even if you had plans) and you didn’t get paid.
7. You feel like a practice kid.
You’re the oldest, so you’re the first to do everything, which means your parents don’t know how to react or what to expect, which makes them way too overprotective of you, but they become more easygoing for the second one, and the third (you’re welcome guys).
8. You're their taxi.
You don’t mind taking them and picking them up from their friend’s house, practice or school because they’re so grateful and always say thank you and give you gas money, right?
9. You're really protective.
They drive you crazy, but they’re your younger brother and sister, and you can’t help but feel like it’s your job to make sure they stay out of trouble. And you get used to them calling you their second mom.
10. You love being a role model.
There’s something about having someone look up to you that makes you feel good. It makes you push yourself to be a better person.
11. You love your siblings.
As annoying as being the oldest can sometimes get, you wouldn’t change it for the world. You love your brother and sister more than anyone, and you’re not afraid to admit it.
