Sometimes We Need A Little Time For Our Thoughts To Breath

There is solitude in silence.

We have all been there. You want to share an unwanted opinion, or your feelings take over your body and you feel as though you should scream to let them out. Your frustration builds as you realize you can't share those thoughts, maybe you're uncomfortable sharing them or your screams with the rest of the world. So, in conclusion, you drown your thoughts with questions and answers to the questions even you still don't know the true answer to. But what if there's another way?

My sister once told me about meditation and honesty the first thing that popped into my head was hippy mumbo-jumbo and downward facing dog. I know; stereotyping. But then I started reading articles and talking to my friends who have tried it and found even their therapists or counselors recommend taking some time out of their day to meditate. It's honestly not what they show on tv, it's different for every person but it seems to help many heal. Maybe heal isn't the right word but it's a way for them to help gain a little control on what they thought they were losing.

I recently took up meditation, well I downloaded an insightful app that basically teaches you new ways to control your daily thoughts. I'm not saying I'm a certified doctor and this is a cure-all or if you're in a panic you can suddenly put your thoughts to a halt and become a zen master of yoga but I have learned you can help yourself control what to focus on. Focusing is so hard these days with televisions, computers, phones, and tablets, why not use some of these devices to aid in fixing the problems we've created ourselves.

We have so many things to think about, let alone know if our thoughts and actions are right, or wrong, or normal, or strange. My mind races daily about the things I have to do or if I have completed my checklist accurately and in a timely manner, even what people are thinking about me. There usually aren't enough hours in the day to think about everything in my mind. But I do make a little time throughout my day to sit in silence. Yes, in pure silence. Not checking my Instagram or Facebook. Not silently watching tv or doing a workout. I take a little time out of my day to clear my mind. To sit back, for just a few minutes and let my problems and thoughts be still. Maybe call it hitting the reset button for that day.

It's so easy to get lost in your thoughts and ideas. Your mind is a function of the body. Think about it this way, if your body was as physically active as your mind is mentally; I don't think we could function properly. I would suggest next time you're feeling overwhelmed; maybe you just need to get your thoughts in order, or just have some spare time. Go find a space and sit quietly, focusing just on the silence, letting go of the noises around you and let your mind wander to solitude. If you're having trouble there are multiple free apps to help you get there. I recommend Headspace, updating you with daily reminders on controlling your thoughts and a clear step by step voice guide to help you let go of your thoughts. A free way to help get your mind in order? I don't think you will be disappointed. Do what makes you happy. Happiness is good for the soul.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
