More often than not, when people see my tiny semicolon tattoo on my right wrist, they don't really understand its purpose. Some people assume it's because I'm an English major and I like writing, but others know it's a lot deeper than that.
About a year ago, my mother taught me exactly what the semicolon project is. She's been a psychologist for several years and has dedicated her life to help others. Throughout my childhood and adulthood she has taught me the value of mental health, as well as the importance of supporting others.
About a year ago, I was shocked when she suggested we get matching tattoos (she's always been against getting one). That's when she told me about the semicolon project. A semicolon, in grammar, is a punctuation that can be used when an author could have ended their sentence, but chose not to. This is why it is the perfect symbol for empowerment. The tattoo is supposed to act as an encouragement for yourself and those around you. The organization and movement are dedicated to presenting hope and love for those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction and other mental health problems. For those suffering with depression or suicidal thoughts, the semicolon reminds one that they are the author of their own lives.
Personally, the reason I decided to get involved with the project was ultimately to support the project's vision. Here is a few of the many visions that can be found on the official projects' website:
The vision is that together we can achieve lower suicide rates in the US and around the world;
That together we can start a conversation about suicide, mental illness and addiction that can't be stopped;
We envision love and hope and we declare that hope is alive;
We envision a society that openly addresses the struggle with mental illness, suicide and addiction;
Overall the message is truly beautiful and touching. One of the most important things people need while receiving help with mental health issues, is definitely a whole lot of love, hope and support. Together we can give that to one another and remind those that they are not alone.
