The Roommates Every Girl Needs

They're good for more than just borrowing clothes!

When you live with roommates in the close quarters of a dorm or small apartment, a funny thing starts to happen. As time goes by, parts of your style, your humor, and your study habits start to look more and more alike. You begin to wonder where your roommates end and you begin. That being said, each girl can truly bring something different to the dynamic. No one is perfect, but between all of you, it sure comes close.

1. The Style Icon

When your full closet looks useless to you, she’s the one who swoops in with advice and a perfect statement necklace. From career fairs to first dates, she is happy to give you the once-over before you head out the door. Her carefully constructed closet is the go-to when you’re at a loss (and you were supposed to be somewhere five minutes ago.)

2. The Straight Shooter

This is the roommate you go to when you want a real quality life chat. She isn’t always going to tell you what you want to hear, but her trusted perspective is hard to ignore. Her advice isn’t necessarily warm and fuzzy, and yet it’s undeniably solid. She helps you make decisions you can stick with.

3. The Free Spirit

Just when you feel like the routine you’re stuck in is going to suffocate you, she’s there to keep things interesting. She’s up for any kind of adventure, whether it’s a midnight ice cream run or impulsively signing up for a half marathon. Her spontaneity can introduce you to places and people you may never have known otherwise!

4. The Academic

If you can’t find her, check the library first! This roommate is willing to do whatever it takes to land the grade she needs—even if it means setting up camp in a library to a point where you wonder whether you should go looking for her. Her work ethic is contagious, and her successes are exciting for both of you because you know how hard she worked for them.

5. The Romantic

When you first met her, it was as though you’d already known her for years. Her talent is in getting to know people for who they really are because she isn’t afraid to ask the tough questions. Her signature deep talks are known to go into the small hours of the morning, even with classes looming the next day. Her favorite subject for these deep talks is, of course, relationships.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
