If you’re a girl with a lot of brothers and sisters, or lived in an all-girls dorm with community bathrooms, the thought of moving into a giant house with 90 girls probably doesn’t frighten you. If you’re like me, however, it’s terrifying. As a girl who grew up with no brothers and sisters living at home, and had a giant suite-style dorm freshman year, sharing a bathroom and living so close to that many people, even though they’re my sisters, was a scary thought.
There are a few realities of living in-house that may require adjusting to: there is no privacy, it is never completely silent (if you want to nap you probably can’t), the food is not always the healthiest, and the windows for when meals are served will probably not match when you’re actually hungry.
All in all, I went into it feeling uncomfortable, scared, and partially out of place. To my very pleasant surprise, living in-house is not at all what I expected, and I’m only one week in. All of those realities are true and I’m sure will become irritating, but they are just part of the privilege of living with 90 girls who are not just my friends, but also my sisters.
Living in a sorority house means no privacy, but it also means always having someone to hang out with. It means laying in a twin bed with four of my sisters, going over our days and laughing about absolutely whatever comes to mind. I gave up my privacy, but I gained best friends. A house full of girls is never silent; instead, it’s filled with laughter, deep conversations, and memories in the making. The awkward dinner times and unhealthy food are shared with my sisters and friends, and that automatically makes everything better.
As scared as I was (and still kind of am), my fears are more rational, like having to wait until midnight to shower because they’re all taken, and my excitement for the year grows. I live in a beautiful house with 90 amazing people and even though I’m only one week into my year, I already know living in a sorority house will be an unforgettable experience.
Here's to an amazing year in the Delta Palace.
