I understand that seasonal change happens gradually, but I cannot help but to feel like the frog in the boiling water. It happens so slowly we don’t realize our surroundings are even changing until: BAM! We’re breaking out the shorts (and the Venus razors…). Springtime is a wonderful time, but just like that over the counter ADHD medicine, there are a few negative side-effects.
PRO:
Everything is blooming and coming to life! Flowers are blossoming, trees are budding, new animals are being born, etc. Springtime is an overall time of life; there is even a holiday in spring dedicated to life! (I’m talking about Easter, not March Madness.)
CON:
I have sneezed 27 times today. Here’s a fun science lesson for you: all the blooming and life-giving processes for the flowers happens because of a substance we call pollen. It’s bright yellow and sticky and it spreads in the springtime and fertilizes the ground so new flowers will grow. It is also possible to be highly allergic to it. I am one of the blessed few whose face, eyes, and throat swell at the mere mention of the life-bringing dust.
PRO:
There are a lot of really fun holidays and activities going on during springtime. There’s March Madness, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, and Spring Break!
CON:
Everyone expects you to suddenly be a basketball expert and fill out accurate brackets even though you haven’t watched a basketball game since you were in high school. Brightly colored candied marshmallows are suddenly everywhere and discounted encouraging you to buy them and eat every single one of them. Strangers are suddenly coming up to you and assessing your clothing for the right to pinch you because you wore the wrong color. There are no downsides to spring break. Oh, wait… When you come back you have to take final exams.
With every season comes ups and downs, but I hope you can enjoy this beautiful time of year. I know you’re stressed about schoolwork and planning for next semester, but just always remember you’ll never get this season back. You’ll be an entirely different person next spring. So don’t forget to take time to smell the roses. Unless you’re like me and you’re allergic to pollen, then stay as far away from flowers as possible.
“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”
Charles Dickens
