The One Thing I Wish I'd Known Before Joining Greek Life

The Cliché is True: It’s Not Four Years, It’s For Life

The One Thing I Wish I'd Known Before Joining Greek Life

We all come across so many different types of people in our lives. Once we enter college, you meet what feels like hundreds of people a day. Yet, the big school doesn't quiet feel like home yet. One day, you find this group of people that become your favorite individuals and you want to be able to call them your sisters. These girls become your family by choice. As cliché as it sounds, the saying “it’s not four years, it’s for life” is true.

Joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, but let me tell you why.

  1. You have an entire sisterhood of girls who care about you no matter what.
  2. Seriously, even if you don’t want any friends, they are always there for you.
  3. You have to plan on having a huge wedding to accommodate for having a social in the reception.
  4. Not to mention the fact that you have to have so many bridesmaids…
  5. You always have somebody to go out with.
  6. You always have somebody to Netflix and chill with.
  7. The rewards are endless.
  8. No matter how much you dedicate to the sorority, you know you’ll always get something in return.
  9. There is always somebody telling you to make bad decisions with them.
  10. There are constantly sisters around to help you with life advice whether it’s about your future, boys or which shoes to wear.
  11. You not only have a biological family tree, you have an entire lineage in your sorority.
  12. You can quote Mean Girls endlessly.
  13. You never need to worry about not getting enough likes on Instagram.
  14. Even if you don’t plan on making connections in college, you have those connections no matter what.
  15. You share a closet with every girl in your sorority.

It’s funny looking back at high school and remembering all of the times I said to myself that I would never join a sorority. I mean seriously, all of those myths about Greek life really stuck in my mind. Yet, these girls have changed my life forever and I couldn’t thank them enough. It’s crazy to think about how much has changed in the past couple of years, but the people by my side have remained the same. Although most of us are different people from before we joined, I think most of us have changed for the better. We’ve become more loving individuals. We set high goals for ourselves because we know we can achieve the best. We become the women that we’ve always wanted to be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
