I love films and Netflix serves as the ultimate site to fit any film-mood you may be in. Here is a list of the top ten films that everyone should watch. Honestly, each and every film on this list has shown me something i may not have before and a few have even changed the way I see my entire life. I hope that this list serves you like it has for me.
10. Begin Again (2013)
Directed and written by John Carney and starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, Begin Again follows the story of singer-song writer discovered by a record label executive, struggling to keep his label alive. The two decide to collaborate on an album entirely recorded in public locations throughout New York City. Begin Again shows that taking risks is what gives us possible opportunities and that "you're only as strong as your next move".
9. Atonement (2007)
Starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley and directed by Joe Wright is film based on Ian McEwan's novel by the same name. This film is a following the effects of a crime and its consequences over time. Taking place in the 1930s, continues to show what six decades can bring. Atonement is a romantic drama war film that is "joined by love, separated by fear [and] redeemed by hope".
8. Ashby (2015)
Film directed and written by Tony McNamara, Ashby is considered to be a comedy-drama that follows the story of high schooler, Ed Wallis who needs to write an essay about an older person for his English class. Ed Wallis, played by Nat Wolff, finds himself in a many life situations that are relatable and will make you think about your own life. Also starring Mickey Rourke, Emma Roberts and Sarah Silverman, Ashby will surprise you, make you cry, and will remind you that "life is about knowing how to take a hit".
7. The Last Five Years (2014)
The Last Five Years is a musical comedy-drama film based on the Jason Robert Brown's musical of the same name. Starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan, The Last Five Years follows the story of a couple in love beginning in two different places. This film shows a journey of romance but not in chronological order. The character, Cathy's songs begin at the end of their relationship while the character, Jamie's songs begin at the beginning of their love story. The Last Five Years takes its viewers on a journey of their own, following all of the twists and turns relationships have through songs of first meeting to songs sharing how it all went wrong.Overall, this film shows that "there are two sides to every love story".
6. Stuck In Love (2012)
Written and directed by Josh Boone, Stuck In Love follows the different love stories of a family that's trying to figure their lives and themselves out. Starring Jennifer Connelly, Greg Kinnear, Lily Collins, Nat Wolff, and Logan Lerman, Stuck In Love an indepentdent romantic comedy-drama showing the complicated relationships with a successful writer father, a college student daughter, and teenage son figuring out how to okay and happy. Throughout everything this film has to offer, this is "a story about first loves and second chances".
5. One Day (2011)
One Day follows the paths that two friends turned lovers take throughout the span of eighteen years. Each year throughout this film shows a glimpse into what happens on the same date and how each person live's change as they grow older. Directed by Lone Scherfig, written by David Nicholls, and starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, One Day will make you question your own life and the many possibilities within your own life that could change everything forever. This film will make you smile, laugh, and cry throughout the many years shared within a relationship.
4. The Truman Show (1998)
The Truman Show follows the story of orphaned child raised inside a simulated television show solely filming his life set up by a corporation. His Entire life from birth was set up, filmed, and broadcasted live twenty-four hours a day for audiences everywhere. Directed by Peter Weir, written by Andrew Niccol and starring Jim Carey, Laura Linney, and Noah Emmerich, The Truman Show is a mind-blowing story line that will make you think about your own life and how crazy it would be if everything that happens to you is fake.
3. Mr. Nobody (2009)
Mr. Nobody is a science fiction drama film showing that in the year 2092, humanity has reached mortality with creating endless cells. Directed and written by Jaco Van Dormael and starring Jared Leto, Sarah Polley, Diane Kruger, and Linh Dan Pham, Mr. Nobody follows the character, Nemo Nobody, the last mortal being on Earth as he reflects on the 118 years of his life while he gets closer and closer to his death. When remembering and sharing his life, Nemo provides three specific situations of his life while sharing many of their possible outcomes and not indicating which is his true past. Mr. Nobody will make you question different situations in your own life and how different they would be if they had a different outcome and that "if you never make a choice, anything is possible".
2. What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
What's Eating Gilbert Grape takes place in a small town in Iowa where a seemingly average family reveals that their lives are anything but normal. This film shows the many struggles one family has as they try to continue their lives after their father hangs himself, their mother only stays at home, and their youngest brother lives with a developmental disability. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, written by Peter Hedges and starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Lewis, and Leonardo DiCaprio, What's Eating Gilbert Grape shows that even when many things in life may go wrong, there is always a way to continue.
