The One Issue That Should Decide Your Vote

Because if this doesn't change, none of the other issues will exist.

The One Issue That Should Decide Your Vote
Hayley Buckman

Two days ago, it was 73 degrees. Yesterday, it was 48. Today as I got into my car to head to work, I had to scrape my windshield because it was a balmy 32. I may not be a mathematical prodigy or a meteorologist, but I don't think it takes expertise to know that there's something wrong with that much of a variance in such a short period of time.

My complaint is irrelevant compared to the catastrophic events that the people of the Caribbean, Haiti, and now Florida are dealing with. Hurricane Matthew has now been downgraded to a category 3, but its precedence, along with Tropical Storm Nichole, should be enough to have the entire world wondering, "what in the hell is going on with our planet and what can we do about it?"

Maybe you don't care much about the weather, and that's cool. I get it. But what you should care about is quality of life and how animals and people alike are already being effected by climate change daily. As a Colorado native, I've seen the forest of Rocky Mountain National Park deplete drastically before my very eyes. Over the last decade and a half, tens of millions of trees have perished, directly impacting wildlife and increasing the severity and probability of wildfires that threaten not only the environment, but homes, businesses, towns and air quality.

You live on the coast? Fun fact: sea levels have risen 8 inches since the 1980s, ocean temperatures have increased and will continue to do so, and within the next century (let's be real, probably sooner) many of our arctic friends won't have a suitable place to live. Polar bears, walruses, penguins, several species of whale, arctic foxes, they will die out because their ecosystem is melting. Their food chain is becoming absolutely devastated. The ice is vanishing, and so are the chances that countless living organisms will survive the change. Including millions of humans.

And don't just trust my pleading article. Do your own research. Don't trust the Twitter account of Donald Trump or the shoddy presidential debates we all get to Snapchat filter the hell out of. Be an educated individual and take the time to sort through what's reality and what's questionable. The process is terrifying yes, but it's absolutely necessary. We are the cause of climate change and we are the only ones who can make a difference.

I've always wanted to be a mother. More than anything. I've dreamed of having children since I could name my baby dolls. But...climate change makes me rethink bringing another person into the world. Not because I think they will make things worse with their carbon footprint, but because I think the world will be in shambles. Already, dozens of our most treasured landmarks, national parks, and cities are at risk. Ellis Island could be underwater in a matter of decades.

If you believe that your voice doesn't matter in the upcoming presidential election, you've never been more wrong.

The truth is, none of the other issues that are important to you will be relevant if THERE ISN'T A PLANET OR A HUMAN RACE TO CARE ABOUT THEM.

I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, but I am going to tell you that climate change is the most dire threat to ever face our society. Ever, ever, ever. Check your facts, figure out who cares about the planet and acknowledges climate change as a scary, horrendous, and immediate danger, and please base your vote off of their platform in regards to the environment. I promise, your grandchildren will thank you when they get to enjoy the beauty of the Earth that still exists because we did our best (our actual best) to save the planet today.

You can look up Hillary, Donald (doesn't have a climate change policy, who would've thought), and Gary Johnson's climate change initiatives here.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
