As I was walking to my next class this morning, I stepped into the Communication Arts and Sciences building to see a swarm of students right in front of the TV. I decided to stop and watch and realized it was a trial. The trial of Larry Nassar. It was just like a scene from a movie, no one talking, eyes glued to the screen, everyone in awe.
Only recently did I find out that Larry Nassar was a part of the Spartan family. The school that is known for an amazing football and basketball team, great programs in the world of science, and even for knowing how to have fun every once in a while will now be known as the school that ignored the cries against Larry Nassar. It amazes me that you got away for so long.
You abused the power to HEAL people and instead brought pain and suffering. The very fact that you committed acts like this shows how weak you are. You, sir, stripped away the innocence of innumerable young girls. That's something they can never get back and you took it away with such ease and with no shame. 175 years is nothing close to what you deserve but I really hope you live the whole 175 years.
The scariest part of this nightmare is that you are not alone. There are so many nauseating people just like you. People who take advantage and abuse their power, people who take advantage of young children, and people who take advantage of trust. But guess what Mr. Nassar? We are also not alone. As you people grow weaker we only grow stronger. This will end and you helped us with the first couple of steps.
To all the powerful, courageous, and strong girls that have been affected by this cruel man in someway I wish I could say I understand what you're feeling. But I can't because I don't. I can't imagine what you felt, what you are feeling, and what you will feel but congratulations. You are finally free and the monster is now your prisoner.
"Little girls don't stay little forever. They grow into strong women that return to destroy your world" is something Kyle Stephens said during a trial and I've never heard anything more empowering.
And lastly, Mr. Nassar thank you. For showing the public that people like you exist and showing the world that we can do things, anything, as long as we stand together and speak up. You may have gotten away with this crime for many years but now it's time for you to learn that there are consequences and you need to take responsibility for your actions.
