Like Hallie says in "The Parent Trap," "A dad is an irreplaceable person in a girl's life." I wholeheartedly believe that my dad is the best dad you could ever want. And I'm sure many of you think the same of your fathers, so keep reading. I had a lot of trouble writing this because there's just so much to say. I mean really, how do you thank the man who has given you everything? I look back on my childhood and think that I'm the luckiest person in the world. And it wouldn't have been if it wasn't for you, Dad. So thank you.
My dad taught me at a young age that it wasn't the destination, but the journey that matters. When you're a kid you think it sounds dumb because all you hear is that you're going to the beach or to a different country and you couldn't be more excited. But as you get older you realize your dad drove instead of flying because that meant he got to spend more time with you. Being crammed in the car for a 22 hour drive to Key West isn't glamorous by any means, but I have memories of the trip that are more valuable than the sand I brought back. Thank you for the endless travel adventures. You have given me a view into the world and into different cultures. I wouldn't trade our vacations for anything.
Anyone who knows me knows that I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve, which doesn't always turn out the best for me. Any time I've been hurt my dad doesn't promise to kill the boy (although I know he would) or tell me "I told you so." He's compassionate and empathetic. He lets me make my own mistakes so I can learn from them. But my dad is always there for me. He has the best shoulder to cry on. Sorry for staining your shirts with mascara.Your dad is the person you go to when everything seems to be falling apart. I've been in some bad situations where I just don't know what to do. My dad never gets flustered or angry, he simply says "What can I do to make it better" or "How can I help?" My father is one of the most selfless people I know. I am so grateful for his advice and knowledge. It seems like he knows the answer to everything in the world (and even acts like it too sometimes)!
Getting away from all the seriousness, my dad is a character. Literally, he'll start taking on characters and spewing lines from our favorite movies. He's always cracking a joke. But I'm not talking about Dad jokes, I'm talking about the good ones that make you choke on your drink. His subtle sarcasm makes my sides hurt. He knows all the best movies to watch that end in us crying of laughter. I know when I need a pick-me-up, I'll just text my dad and he's got something witty to say. He reminds me that the world is a much happier place when you're laughing.
This ode to my father goes to all the dads out there. Thanks for making us feel unstoppable. Your support and never ending love is inspiring. You protect us in more way than one but always push us to dream big.
Love always, your little girl.
