Acts of kindness can be as little as holding a door open or as large as saving someone’s life.
My sister is one of the kindest humans you could meet. Don’t get me wrong, she can be a complete demon when needed. However, her nickname is “Snow White.” She has a real way with animals that I can’t explain. She volunteers for two different animal rescues and used to foster animals too. Of all the selfless acts that I have witnessed my sister do, there are two that always come to mind. Oddly enough, both stories happen on the same stretch of road.
A few years ago, my sister, mother, and I were driving back from dinner, and we stopped at a traffic light. Out of the corner of our eyes we saw a small dog run into a gas station. My sister being the young and avid animal rescuer she was, forced my mom to pull into the gas station so that she could get the dog.
After wrangling the dog, we decided to walk it back to the yard we saw it come from. However, when we arrived at the house, the woman who lived there said it was not her dog. The dog also did not have a collar or a tag. We consequently spent the next two hours driving around trying to find the owner of this dog. After awhile it became a game of chase between us and the owners who were also out looking for the dog. Eventually, we did end up catching up with the owner to return the dog to them.
The next story is probably two years later but on the same road. This time it was my sister and I driving home from McDonald’s.
We saw something flopping in the middle of the road. We thought it was a plastic bag but sadly, it was not.
A dog had been hit by a car and was still in the middle of the road. A group of people had also stopped to help the dog, my sister and I among them. We called the number on the dog’s collar and also called animal control. Sadly, the owner never answered. We waited until animal control arrived and could properly take care of the dog. My sister was truly broken up by what we had witnessed, but I feel that if we hadn’t stopped, she would have been more upset because she could have helped the dog.
The fact that my sister wanted to stop to help this dog even though she knew that it would not end happily really speaks to how much she cares about animals.
These are two of the many instances in which my sister tries to save animals. Whenever we drive past some type of animal she always wants to stop and rescue it. She gets very excited when she sees an animal, but the excitement quickly dies down when she realizes that said animal in fact has an owner and doesn’t need saving. I believe there is a part in her brain that goes into protective mother mode whenever she sees any type of animal.
She is one of the kindest humans I have met, and her need and ability to help animals is incredible. She truly is a hero of mine.
