The Heart That I'm Following
Abbey Dickhudt

This universe is huge, gigantic, and every type of vast measurement that is impossible for us to comprehend. Our own planet earth seems endless and holds an impossible amount of wonders and beauties for us to see. We, as humans, are immensely complex and diverse.

The meanings that our lives take on are incredibly different and can vary for every individual. One may believe in a certain idea of their own life, and their neighbor may have an entirely different idea of what their life means. That is what is so good about life, we are all able to live it out in different ways.

On top of having these complex and incredible systems and ideas of life around us, we are also surrounded by constant pressures and ideas that come from society and from our culture. There are certain ways of living that are portrayed as correct every day, and it is up to you to decide if you will follow those ways or find your own. The people around you may hike up the importance of one action or one habit that you just do not see fitting, yet the message is still there.

With all of this, it can seem like a dooming task to figure out how you fit into all of it.

The answer that I am trying to live out is that of following my very own, lively heart. I’m trying to tune into and listen to the truth and the life that resides within who I am.

This includes standing up for my values and beliefs, questioning my irrational fears and stereotypes, and allowing myself to both fail and succeed in my endeavors. By listening to my heart and following the truth within me, I am embracing all that I am.

By following my own heart, I am also following my own dreams. I am aware of different expectations and assumptions that are surrounding what my future should be, but I don’t hold on to those if I don’t feel as though they are right for me.

When looking at the vastness of the world around you, for me to be saying to look inwards may seem minuscule and unimportant. But your understanding of the world around you starts by understanding the world around you. It starts with you allowing yourself to be challenged and to take some adventures. It starts with you taking the next leap of faith and trusting that you will find your way. It all starts with you.

Just as I am beginning this journey, I also encourage you to find your heart and listen to it. Listen to what you need and what you want, and trust that.

Trust in this world and in this life. You are a part of it, you have a purpose, and you have an awesome heart to follow.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
