Whether you are just getting out of high school and just began college, or have been a college student for years, there might be something you refused to give up. Playing video games. Gaming has become a increasingly popular past time for students and non-students alike. Being able to delve into a world that can drown out the stresses of everyday can be a very appealing thing to do in your free time. But is this past time possibly causing you to fall back in studies, or even constricting you from growing socially? Is there a way to take gaming and actually grow from it? Let's dive right into it, shall we?
Let's first talk about the pros of gaming in college. For many individuals, college life is a frustrating lifestyle to get used to. Having to deal with varying class times, mountains of homework, working at a job for hours each day, etc. It's a lot to take in all at once. So playing a game can be a source of relieving stress, and clears up a clouded mind. This can allow for a quick breather between all the commotion that everyday brings. Another benefit to gaming in college is that you are very likely going to meet people who share the same interests as you with gaming. This allows for relationships to grow that encourage cooperation, competition, and the like in a positive and fun environment. From just a quick game of Super Smash Bros, to a night dedicated to playing League of Legends, gaming can fit in pretty much any time span throughout the day. Finally, it can be used as a discussion piece. Gaming has grown far beyond the realms of just having a character and objective, or being restricted just to entertainment. It can be utilized in many fields of life, from medical to education, to just talking about the lore of your favorite series, there is almost no end to what can be discussed, whether you are a gamer or not.
All that being said, too much of a good thing can be bad. As a college student, your time should be spread out in a manner that leads to success in your field. Playing too much or too often can cause you to fall behind academically, and overall, waste the money that you are investing into your education. Although it can be a great discussion piece for some, it is not for everyone. Talking about only gaming can cause topic fatigue, and drive people away from gaming or, in worst case scenario, you. Be willing to talk about other subjects, and possibly try out new things to broaden your scope of interests! Finally, people can take gaming way too seriously. Not in the way that it is not a valid media that is ever growing, but people who are sore-losers or rage gamer's can definitely ruin the experience for anyone involved. You'll get the chance to meet people of all nationalities, personalities, and interests. This is both a great thing and something to be wary about. Sometimes there are just going to be people that will ruin gaming for others, including you.
Although there are things to be wary about being gamer a college, it is not a bad thing to have it in moderation. It's a great way to relieve stress, spend time with friends, and just to talk about. Just do not be the person that ruins it for others and, ultimately, yourself.
