October marks the start of fall, pumpkins, Halloween movies and this year for people everywhere the countdown until Presidential Elections.
With the race down to its last couple of weeks, there has been an uproar in campaigning, debating and tweeting resulting in a consistent slew of new insults every day. However, if you manage to look past all the white noise, there is a real election taking place for the future leader of this country. Moreover, regardless of the result it will be a significant shift in history.
The way I see it, the headline on inauguration day can display one of the following bylines: “Real-Estate Mogul in Charge of United States” or “First Female President in United States History.” I will admit both are tad exaggerated but they represent the change in society to fit a younger and evolving generation.
This past week Michelle Obama was in North Carolina, campaigning across college’s everywhere trying to appeal to the younger first time voters. She too recognizes the power in our generation and the power in making our voices heard by voting. Further encouraging first time voters everywhere to go out, and make sure their opinions are counted. Our generation no-longer abides by pre-set norms or follow the standards set by our predecessors. This is not to say we run lawless and home-free but rather displays the evolution of legislature as a result of our changing values.
Why this matters? With a younger generation, came social media, and more opinions and more static in the air. Actual valuable information that affects our future generation ends up getting lost in the jumble. We have already implemented or are advocating for major changes that weren't seen in the constitution; see the passage of Supreme Court Decision in Obergefell v. Hodges legalizing gay marriage, or the Black Lives Matter protests in Charlotte, NC.Yet, this election season can select a President that could change all of that. We need a leader that embodies these ever-changing values and essentially doesn’t put us in place of regression to outdated and discriminatory ideas.
Stand up, use your voice and vote this season. This may have all been reiterated many times before, but it matters. Your voice matters. And it’s important not to let October also mark the fall of our country. My opinion may be biased, but my point still stands firm. A real change in this neck to neck race can only come from younger voters making use of their opinions.
Halloween may be scary, kids, but Donald Trump as president would be a never- ending horror film.
