"I'm a Little High on Summertime"

The Essential Summer Playlist

I don’t know about you, but I live for summer music playlists. From the the rush of freedom I get driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, to sitting in my room with my best friends blaring our speakers as loud as they go. I can tell you from personal experience that a solid summer playlist is crucial. The way I see it, there’s a science behind creating a sick mix of your favorite songs to jam to in the sun. You can make one dedicated to your state, a mellow summer list complete with emotional Lana Del Rey songs, or just a list of your favorite feel-good music. Because I dabble in various music genres, my playlists usually tend to be long and diverse. With that said, as a final ode to summer, I present to you part of my summer 2k15 playlist. Enjoy!

1. Growing Up - Macklemore feat. Ed Sheeran

I have no shame in saying I played this song approximately 3 times a day this summer. As a new parent, Macklemore wrote "Growing Up" for his recently born daughter as an ode to being young and living it up. Not only is it a beautiful gesture towards his child, but “Growing Up” is definitely a song for everyone to live by.

2. “Raw and True” - Kehlani

If you’re still riding that high from a yummy summer love or just feeling good about yourself, listen to this song by the gorgeous, soulful Kehlani Parrish. “Raw and True” talks about seeking love with true, pure intentions rather than chasing lust through material things.

3. “Coffee” - Miguel

I don’t need to say much about this song, other than I’m impressed by Miguel’s creativity in his lyrics. Just listen and you’ll know what I mean…

4. “Just A Friend” - Biz Markie

A necessary summer throwback, “Just A Friend” is always a good choice in any driving, social, or solo situation.

5. “Homegrown Honey” - Darius Rucker

As a past, temporary resident of North Carolina, I’ll admit I have a little obsession with country music. This is one of my favorites to blast anytime I’m in the car.

6. “Cruise” - Florida Georgia Line

Florida Georgia Line is definitely on repeat multiple times a day all year round. “Cruise” is an especially perfect summer song that everyone should have on their playlists and if you're really feeling it, check out the remix with Nelly.

7. “Alive” - Kehlani

Another hit by Kehlani, “Alive” is a song that speaks to your soul and makes you feel, well, alive.

8. “Dani California” - Red Hot Chili Peppers

A classic California song.

9. “Goodbye” - Who is Fancy

Early this summer, Who is Fancy released their hit single “Goodbye,” which became a radio favorite right off the bat. A simple song that speaks a lot of truth, “Goodbye” is a great, catchy summer anthem.

10. “Numbers” - Hoodie Allen

Hoodie Allen never ceases to deliver, and of course he’s done it again.

11. “Ugly Boy” - Die Antwoord

To put it simply, this south African rap duo is raw yet intriguing. Not only is this particular song super dope, but the music video is a creation of its own. Fun fact: the pair of rappers recently appeared in the movie Chappie.

12. “Coming Home” - Leon Bridges

Leon Bridges’ “Coming Home” is a breath of fresh air. Having a similar old-timey style to artists such as Raphael Saadiq, Leon Bridges sings a sweet love song that makes you want to melt in his arms.

13. “Everyday” - A$ap Rocky Feat. Mark Ronson, Rod Stewart, and Miguel

Sick beat, great collaboration.

14. “Floats my Boat” - Aer

Aer is pretty much the definition of summer. “Floats My Boat” one of the happiest songs I listened to this summer.

15. “Here” - Alessia Cara

A song for all the social wallflowers.

16. “Sunday Candy” - Chance the Rapper

Chance the Rapper is known for his unique beats, heavenly lyrics, and signature vocal introductions. On his new album, The Social Experiment, Chance takes his God-given talents to a new level. “Sunday Candy” is one of my favorites off TSE.

17. “Spotless Mind” - Jhené Aiko

The lovely Jhené Aiko serenades us once again with her single “Spotless Mind” from her most recent album Souled Out. Any Jhené Aiko song can usually be found at the top of my 25 most played songs on my phone and “Spotless Mind” is most likely number one on that list.

18. “Bed Peace” - Jhené Aiko

Another feel good song by Jhené Aiko, Bed Peace is the perfect song for a lazy day of kicking it in your bed.

19. “FourFive Seconds” - Rihanna Feat. Kanye West and Paul McCartney

A perfect finale to any playlist, “FourFive Seconds” by Rihanna, Kanye West, and Paul McCartney is a trifecta of brilliance.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
