The End of A Chapter

A reflection and farewell.

The End of A Chapter
Caio

2016 has been a very weird year, and I believe many people can agree with that statement. Wild things have happened around the globe: earthquakes in Italy, deaths of major celebrities and artists, a bigoted, racist, angry cheese puff poised to take control of the U.S. It's been a roller-coaster ride all throughout.

I've got to say, since I began writing for Odyssey, there has been plenty to talk and discuss. I felt it was a great start to put my works out there. To, in a way, advertise myself and show off my abilities to the public. I wanted to voice my opinion and hope that others could see this and be able to understand where I'm coming from with my experiences. I think now in this dark time of tensions in our country, and the coming of a government run by extremely racist and bigoted individuals, as well as the unfortunate happenings of hate crimes due in part to this, it's important we write to show our frustrations and to fight to continue to end this strain of evil that exists in our country.

I will continue to fight, with quill and paper, in hopes that this won't be our unfortunate future. Though, this fight will continue through another medium. More precisely, this will be my final post through Odyssey. I began writing for this site back in April of 2016. I had high hopes, with the promise that my works would be seen by thousands, or even millions, of people. I thought this could be a great way to actually make a name for myself and start my writing career properly. Over the past few months, I produced work after work. I tackled various topics, concerning everything from video games, to my coming out story, to the fight for a higher minimum wage, and then finally to the ever so stressful and controversial presidential election. Yes, I also admit there has been some turbulence, especially when it came to Odyssey directly.

Though, I will refrain from posting anything negative for I'm grateful that I was given the opportunity to write and, for a short time, edit. I'm grateful that I got to work with a team that produced interesting pieces and was also probably the best with communication. I would continue to write, but unfortunately, like this year, I think it's time to end this chapter and begin another. In closing, you will still be able to reread all of what I have here. If you want to keep up with me, you can find me on Wordpress. It's been a hell of year, let's see what 2017 brings us all.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
