It’s no secret that in the transition from high school to college we make new friends and we lose a few on the way. This is the difference in your friendships from high school to college.
Age
In high school, your friends get to witness you turn 16, and you all are still so young and still have years of school to face together. You get to watch one another get your license, and get to mock how bad each of your school year pictures is. Your friends get to witness the young, carefree version of you, share your youth, and make memories of spring break, weekend trips to the mountains, and sneaking out. They got to spend your golden years with you.
In college, your friends get watch you enter adulthood, and they get to see you turn 21 and be with you when you try your first legal alcoholic beverage. They watch you date a person who could be your potential spouse. These friends get the adult you, less reckless, but just as fun. Your college friends get the mature you, your more educated self. They get to struggle with you as you cram for finals and apply for jobs.
Firsts
In high school, your friends get to ride around with you in your first car, may even be passengers in your first fender bender. They were with you when you got ready for you first date, when you got your heart broken for the first time, or when you didn't get into your dream college.
Your college friends get to help you move into your first apartment or watch you purchase your first car on your own. They get to wish you good luck on your first day of your internship.
Getting Ready
In high school, your friends and you get to get ready for prom together, find the date, pick out what to wear, and it is all very exciting.
In college, your friends get to help you pick out your dress or suit for your first real job interview, and they get to anxiously wait with to hear if you got it or not. They are there to congratulate or console you when you hear news on the job.
At your high school graduation, you and your friends have the whole world ahead of you; at your college graduation, your friends and you get to start your lives -- you are no longer students but adults entering the real world.
You value your friends from high school as much as you do your friends from college, but you just have different memories with each. You get to share different times in your lives and you don't value you one over the other. You are grateful you have friends you have known for years and that you have gotten the chance yo know new people in this new stage of your life. No matter when you met them, your friends are your friends and you love them like family.
