This is not another political post condemning Trump. This is not a political post saying that Hillary was the best for the job. I live on a very diverse college campus, with a 25 percent international population. This is merely a reaction piece. This is an article of fears and hopes--raw emotions from the days following the election.
I'll start with fears because there are many.
World Perception: I was told by a friend working in Germany that her friends were congratulating her on our country electing the "new Hitler."
Social Issues: A guy in my class started tearing up in class because he works with low-income children, mostly immigrants. They couldn't stop asking him what would happen to their parents.
I and many of my friends have been told to get an IUD or some other form of birth control that lasts for years, while we still can. They are genuinely afraid this will no longer be easily available to us anymore.
My teammate's only words were "I'm a black woman in America."
There have already been riots and acts of violence towards groups that Trump targeted in his campaign.
Laws: We fear the lack of experience. As I and others talked about Trump's hundred day plan, it is clear that he has very little knowledge of how the US government system works.
He will be appointing an extremely conservative supreme court justice with the potential to be able to appoint more.
He plans to withdraw from many of this country's most important trade deals.
Here are the hopes.
Radicalism: Trump has removed some his most radical ideas from the front page of his website, indicating that they might no longer be at the forefront of his agenda.
He does not hold as extreme views about LGBTQ communities as his running mate.
People are coming together in many areas. In Boston, there was a love rally, in which people of all kinds and political affiliations were able to celebrate each other.
Laws: News sources that have analyzed his hundred day plan have indicated that there are certain aspects that could be good for this country. If we can figure out how to enact them correctly.
World Perception: Many of the world leaders who were fearful have of a Trump presidency have continued to support the United States. There have been many statements of peace and continued cooperation.
The Future: A majority of Millennials voted for Hillary. If only that group of voters had voted, the electoral college map would have been almost entirely blue. We are the wave of the future and we will continue progressing, despite the possible setbacks.
Although a world where Trump is president is terrifying to many Americans, we do not know what could happen. The reactions to the election are very clear that this country is very divided. We underestimated the level of hate that still exists. However, we do not know what will happen or could happen. A lot of what happens depends on you and what you do. We see ourselves as insignificant, but that is not true. In many states, the election came down to a few votes. Every vote matters. Every action matters. Do good. Be good.
