I know what you are thinking. How creative of her to make a Christmas themed article? This isn’t a piece about the 10 things you should get your girlfriend. You are not going to see a bunch of GIFs describing how we feel about all of the presents and food. And this is not an article about where to find the best Christmas lights for your Instagram picture. Today I wrote about the Christmas light we all need to understand and see for ourselves.
Christmas is Jesus’s birthday, in simple terms. So the least we could do is celebrate worldwide. Is that how you describe Christmas? Celebrating the birth of our Savior, who died for all of our broken selves? Or do we get wrapped up in the frosted trees, the mesmerizing lights, and the bountiful amount of gifts?
When we see those things, we think of the most wonderful time of the year. IT’S CHRISTMAS. Cue Hallmark’s 25 Days of Christmas marathon and the catchy music. Why don’t we automatically think of Him coming into the world? Without His birth, we wouldn’t have Christmas to celebrate.
“May the beautiful lights of every Christmas season remind us of Him who is the source of all light.” – David A. Beanor
God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). The real light of Christmas does not come from the top of buildings or from around a tree. It comes from above. His word is a lamp to our feet and a light for our paths. He is the true light of Christmas.
Instead of being in awe of the Christmas lights that make for a pretty sight, let’s be in awe of His Christmas light. In John 12:46, the Lord explains that he came as a light to shine in this dark world. Everything He does is to brighten this world full of sin, brokenness and darkness. The Lord’s son was born to overcome the darkness, to shine the light in the overwhelming brokenness. Christmas is Christmas because Jesus Christ was born, and a flashing light was ready to overcome its challenger.
“His word brought life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone” (John 1:4).
Overall, Christmas is what we make of it. Despite all of the distractions, we can see to it that Christ is at the center of our celebration. Remember that every good and perfect gift this Christmas is from above. Take your eyes off of the worldly things and lift them up this holiday season.
The best light show is from the creator of Christmas, who gave the world His Son. Jesus is the light of our Christmas, the joy in our hearts, and the hope of our world. Don’t be afraid to let His light shine this time of year.
